Match report WSL1 V Hawthorn

Posted April 27th 2010 by Carly Eastman 1 Comment

Waverley hosted the 2009 runners-up Hawthorn in our first home game for the season.

The visitors started the stronger of the two teams, with the Waverley defence showing calmness under pressure.

Emily Paton at central defender was aware of the opposition centre half Kary Chau threat, and superbly nullified the danger with an array of tackles.

With the score still at 0-0 after Hawthorn’s continued attack, Waverley finally found some form through Renee Trost and Paula Diaz Oliva in the midfield. Hawthorn’s defence struggling to keep up with the pace and power of the right sided duo.

The first goal for the match came from a penalty corner strike from Sheree.

Half time: Wav 1 – Hawks 0

In the second half a few positional changes were made, Leah Merrett moving into the centre half position where she dominated the middle of the ground for the rest of the match. Closing down the opposition centre-half Chau, who had been their most dangerous player in the 1st half.

Trost was being tagged all day but still managing to get away with the ball cleanly most times, setting up some great attack.

Lauren Law was in fine form at left half, her opposing striker coming off second best every time.

Early in the second half Waverley made a transfer from left to right where Diaz Oliva received the ball and drove it into the circle where Nicole Price magically deflected the ball into the top comer. The Hawthorn keeper had no chance of blocking the Price deflection.

Hawthorn now look stunned and minutes later Waverley had the ball in the net again for their third goal for the match. This time coming from another penalty corner where Kirsten Thompson found the back of the net through a deflection.

With less than 10 mins to go it seemed like Waverley may have lost it’s composure in defence. The visitors scoring two quick goals, both from penalty corners.

Waverley were certainly looking a little nervous as the visitors were throwing everything into attack to secure an unlikely draw. However for Hawthorn it proved to be too little, too late.

Waverley 3 – Hawthorn 2.

Panthers clip Hawks’ Wings

Posted April 25th 2010 by Travis Brooks 5 Comments

In their first home game for season 2010, the Panthers were keen to make amends for their opening round 3-2 loss where the treasured Bert Batch Cup was claimed by Camberwell.  Under the guidance of new coach Zac Hawes, Waverley State League 1 Men’s team has a new and exciting game plan allowing for a real flair in their approach to the game.  Hosting Hawthorn in front of an extremely vocal home crowd, the team set out to stamp their authority on the game early with high work rate and endless pressure seeing them take the ascendancy early in the match.

Wave after wave of attacks led by strikers Tim Wischusen and Simon Preston, provided a plethora of goal scoring opportunities but the Panthers were unable to convert these opportunities into any scoreboard pressure.  A goal was all that was needed to see this game open up and after some handy work by Preston down the right wing a centimetre perfect pass through traffic found Wischusen camped out on the left post for an easy tap in goal, to register the first for the Panthers.

The first goal provided the catalyst for Waverley to go on a goal scoring spree.   In almost a mirror image of the first goal, it was Wischusen’s turn to find Preston on the right post for the easiest of goals to double the lead to 2-0.

Tim Thompson began to stamp his assertiveness on the game dominating the midfield helping set up numerous Waverley attacks.  He too got involved in the goals, setting up the 3rd goal by finding Travis Brooks for a well crafted back stick deflection deep in the circle.

A brilliant solo effort from Wes Moore late in the 1st half saw him have 2 shots in quick succession with the second too good for the Hawthorn goal keeper and with only a few minutes remaining, it seemed the game was all but over at half time with the Panthers having a controlling 4 goal lead.  Hawthorn however weren’t going to lay down and with some undisciplined defence by Waverley seeing the umpire award a corner for hitting the ball away after a free hit was awarded.  The penalty corner specialist from Hawthorn converted the goal on the half time buzzer seeing the Panther go into the break with a 4-1 lead.

The second half saw a spirited Hawthorn team up the pressure and take the game to Waverley. Another penalty corner conversion saw the lead narrow to 4-2 and the Panthers found themselves in a tough fight for the last 15 minutes of the game.  Strong defence led by Mathugh Freeman and Corey Joseph ensured the Hawks found the going tough, but a goal was needed by the Panthers to ease the mounting pressure from the opposition.  It was Aaron Swindells who stepped up to the plate and provided the much needed stabiliser, swooping like a sparrow and finding the back of the net, putting the game to bed for the Panthers.  With only 5 minutes remaining on the clock, the scores remained at 5-3 and Waverley finally had their first win for season 2010 on the board.

Coach’s Best on Ground: Tim Thompson

Skin Institute Award: Aaron Swindells

Round 1 – Women’s Pennant A Waverley Versus Camberwell

Posted April 20th 2010 by Carly Eastman No Comments

Report written by Mother Fazz:

There was excitement buzzing all around, even though the weather not traditional hockey weather, there was no doubt the Hockey season had started. While the WSL1 were having a great game, the new WPA team came together, a fabulous mix of old and new…..

After a hesitant start our girls applied the pressure, the speedy combination of Rach Rowe and Chrissy Mac put Camberwell under pressure. However, Camberwell put in the first goal.

Not the tallest backline in the world but Dex, Fazz, Kath and Kat gathered themselves and were desperate to keep that ball away from the goal. We were awarded a penalty stroke but unfortunately it was saved. We went into half time 1-0 down.

The second half took a turn for the better with Kirsten (the Captain) scoring our first goal. Rach Rowe then put away our second from a corner. The young guns Brodie, Kat and Pip started to grow in confidence and started to combine well with the likes of Tiller, Kenny, Mel and Jess. A lapse in concentration then saw Camberwell put away their second goal to even things up. Final score 2-2.

Being the first round of the season there was a  lot of gossip to catch up with on the side line, new parents to meet and of course red wine to be drunk, so I apologise if this report is a tad inaccurate!

Met 2 North

Posted April 20th 2010 by pgibson 2 Comments

The Met 2 North team met at the SNHC on Sat arvo with some not everyone knowing each other. But after introductions it was down to the game.
It started slowly with each team fealing each other out. Attacking runs down each side of the field gave us in roads to the Camberwell circle in which 2 first half goals were scored.
We also gave up a goal and went to half time 2-1. It was mentioned that a few players need to work on there of the ball work and to watch for the speed of the ball on the water base.
They listened, the 2nd half tunred on 6 goals to 1. Riley MADDOCK scoring 3 goals, Greg STRYDOM scoring 2 and Andrew LOUEY, James WEBB and Captain Daniel DOBBINS scoring 1 each.
Plenty of work done by centre half Darryl SEEDSMAN who controlled the midfiled allowing for the inside forwards to have the room they needed to allow for the forwards to make leads and create attacking runs. All rounders Warren MOORE and Andrew LOUEY played well on the defensive end stopping the attacking run. Young inside forward David HOWSON was, in my opinion player of the game.
It was a good start to the year that will hopefully continue.

Women’s SL1 match report

Posted April 19th 2010 by Carly Eastman 5 Comments

The Waverley women travelled to Camberwell for their first game of the 2010 season.

Waverley took control of the game from the off-set with an early goal coming from a penalty corner straight hit by Emily Paton. Camberwell quickly moved forward on the counter-attack to try and get one back  however Paton, the 2009 best & fairest winner, was in particularly good form in her role as a central defender, reading the play well and cutting off Camberwell’s attack.

Waverley scored again 3 times in the first half, a deflection by Renee Trost, another straight corner hit from Paton, and the 4th goal for the match saw Eliza Larter drift into the circle with a perfectly timed lead to tap the ball in from a great cross from Kirsty Sheppard.

Half time: Waverley 4; Camberwell 0.

Waverley lost a little momentum in the 2nd half. Camberwell started with a fall away press and the Waverley defence were not quite quick enough to adapt. We were soon defending several short corners.

Camberwell’s corner battery looked dangerous with Jessica Monkivitch getting some straight shots away, but Waverley keeper, Sun-Anne Hocking was more than a match for any shot, making sure that the Waverley defence kept a clean sheet for the day.

Sheree was having a solid game at centre half, her defensive role on the day was particularly impressive as her battle with the opposition centre half, Monkivitch, was one of the highlights of the game.

The 5th and final goal for the game came from a good build up of play. The ball was quickly switched from left half to the right side attack with Nonga and Leah moving the ball into the circle, where Kirsty finished off showing great endeavour in front of the goal, diving to her left to ensure that the ball was in the net.

A great 5-0 win to start the season off against a team that played in the finals last year.

Next week we play Hawthorn at home.
