Kookaburras to play Germany in World Cup Final

Posted March 12th 2010 by Hockey Victoria No Comments

Kookaburras 2 Netherlands 1 (1-0 half time)
Goals – Aus Doerner 27m PC, Aus Turner 55m FG Ned Taekema 58m PS

The Kookaburras will meet Germany for the third consecutive World Cup final after defeating the Netherlands 2-1 during the semi final in New Delhi, India.

With Germany having won the two previous finals against Australia in 2002 and 2006, the Kookaburras will be looking to gain some revenge when the 2010 final is played on Saturday 13 March.

The Kookaburras have good recent form over Germany, recently defeating them in the final of the 2009 Champions Trophy played in Melbourne last December.

The semi final victory over the Netherlands began at a ferocious pace, with both teams playing on at all costs in order to catch the defence off guard.

As they have so often done in the past Australia attacked early, looking to gain an early lead. However the Dutch defence was up to the task, particularly goalkeeper Guus Vogels who produced several great saves throughout the match.

Three time world player of the year Jamie Dwyer was again a focal point in attack for the Kookaburras, while veteran Grant Schubert was also involved heavily in the early stages of the first half.

As the half unfolded the Kookaburras appeared in control, having the majority of the possession and restricting the Netherlands’ few scoring opportunities.

However on there few opportunities they still appeared dangerous, and if not for some good work from defenders Kiel Brown and Graeme Begbie Australian goalkeeper Nathan Burgers could have been under more pressure.

Burgers was forced to step up when the Netherlands were awarded the first penalty corner of the game, however a good save ensured that the Netherlands remained goalless.

Australia’s break through came from their first penalty corner of the night, with defender Luke Doerner scoring his seventh goal of the tournament to hand the Kookaburras a 1-0 lead at the 27 minute mark.

With both teams mistrapping penalty corner attempts in the dying minutes of the half, the score remained 1-0 at the half time break.

The second half began in a different style to the first, with the Netherlands looking more settled and slowing the play in their half which was in direct contrast to the fast paced first half.

This resulted in some early shots on goal to the Netherlands, however once again Australia’s defensive unit lead by Burgers and Brown denied any opportunity.

A scare went through the Australian camp when key playmaker Jamie Dwyer left the pitch injured mid way through the half after landing awkwardly on the ball in the Australian circle. Fortunately he returned to the pitch minutes later, and continued to cause headaches for the Netherlands with his speed and elite ball control skill.

After an even ten minutes the Kookaburras regained the ascendency when striker Glenn Turner received a pass from Simon Orchard in the circle, catching the goalkeeper off guard and scoring Australia’s second goal at the 55 minute mark.

Two goals down on the scoreboard the Netherlands needed to attack at all costs and did, putting the Kookaburras defence under extreme pressure.

When defender Luke Doerner received a yellow card for a tackle outside the circle the Netherlands were awarded a vital penalty corner, giving them a chance to work themselves back into the game with plenty of time remaining.

The penalty corner shot was stopped by the body of Kiel Brown on the goal line, resulting in a penalty stoke which was converted by Taeke Taekema.

With Australia now one player down due to Doerner’s yellow card the Netherlands saw an opening and attacked relentlessly, coming extremely close to finding an equaliser on several occasions.

However to the credit of the Australian team they held firm for the remaining ten minutes, eventually running out 2-1 winners.

Competition Review – Input Needed

Posted March 11th 2010 by Hockey Victoria No Comments

Following on from the pre-Christmas Focus Groups, Hockey Victoria is now moving into the second phase of its wide ranging competition review and we are seeking ideas and input from across the hockey community.

This process will occur in two parts, initially we are seeking submissions detailing concepts or ideas to be included for consideration.

Following on from the compilation and consideration of these submissions a detailed survey of the membership will be undertaken to gauge community response to a range of proposed initiatives.

To get you thinking here are a few ideas that came out of the focus groups are;

•    Promote/relegate a club's 2nds in lock step with their 1sts
•    Specific grades should always play on certain days
•    Create a mid week ladies competition during the day (similar to tennis) at the SNHC - offer a crèche service where the players can bring their children and then play in a social competition
•    Zones for umpires - reduced travel times may lead to increased participation
•    Increase the number of teams in SL1 or Premier Division - start with 12 and increase to 16 teams over time
•    Playing competitions on weeknights – use Sunday nights and Thursday nights
•    Removing bottlenecks between Metro and Pennant
•    Playoffs to determine promotion and relegation
•    Clubs to demonstrate long term commitment to junior program in order to participate in State League – reward commitment to junior development
•    More club days – line up club vs club wherever possible
•    More SL1 showcase days at SNHC
•    Specific grades play on certain days/times – eg Metro 2 plays only on Sunday afternoons.
•    Promotion and relegation of 2nds and 3rds in lockstep with 1sts
•    Structure competition around:

1.    Elite
2.    Development
3.    Social

So if you have an idea or proposal that you would like to see considered please put it in writing to us by email or post .

Submissions are due by the 14th of April.

Don't worry - if you don't have time to make a submission you will still have an opportunity to voice your opinion during the member survey.

Kookaburras set for World Cup Semi Finals

Posted March 9th 2010 by Hockey Victoria No Comments

Kookaburras 2 Pakistan 1 (0-1 half time)
Goals – Pak Abbas 24m PC, Aus Abbott 38m FG/ 68m FG

Two goals to Des Abbott has seen the Kookaburras finish on top of Pool B and qualify for the semi finals at the 2010 World Cup in India, defeating Pakistan 2-1 in their final pool match of the tournament.

Despite controlling the majority of the play, including 30 circle penetrations to 9, the Kookaburras were forced to do it the hard way, trailing at the half time break by one goal.

Following his three goal haul against South Africa, Jamie Dwyer began this match in similar form and was a constant target for the Kookaburras in the circle during the beginning of the match.

However after producing several shots on goal for no result, the Kookaburras were made to pay when Pakistan advanced on one of their few attacks on goal, converting a penalty corner at the 24 minute mark to gain the lead.

Playing for nothing other than pride given that they entered the match unable to gain a place in the semi finals, Pakistan began the second half determined to cause an upset win.

Unfortunately for them Kookaburras striker Des Abbott had other plans, controlling a pass in the circle, pushing the ball to space and firing the ball into the back of the net to equal the score.

Pakistan continually looked to catch the Kookaburras off guard, trying to generate a counter attack at any opportunity. However the Kookaburras were well lead by youngster Matthew Butturini in defence and repelled any attacks.
As the second half continued and both teams failed to score from penalty corner attempts, it appeared as though the match was heading towards a draw.

However Des Abbott again broke the hearts of the Pakistan players, producing a classy deflection off a pass from Rob Hammond to beat the goalkeeper with only two minutes remaining, handing the Kookaburras the victory.

The Kookaburras will now await results from Pool A to be played on Tuesday 9 March to determine who they will face in their semi final.

Korea win the series against a tired Hockeyroos

Posted March 9th 2010 by Hockey Victoria No Comments

Friday 5 March 2010

Korea (3) defeated AUSTRALIA (2)
Half Time Korea (1) AUSTRALIA (1)
Goals:  Australia: Emily Hurtz FG 7 min, Amy Korner PC 37 min Korea: Park Mi Hyun min FG 29 min; Lee Soo Kyung PC 43 min; Lee Soo Kyung PC 49 min

A large crowd watched a high powered, even first half at Duracraft Hockey Stadium.

Australia had the first beak in the tenth minute when Amy Korner brought the ball down the left wing and crossed to Emily Hurtz who powered home a tomahawk into the top left hand corner.

Another penalty corner to Australia a few minutes later was saved first by goalie Jang Soo Ji and although picked up by Hope Munro was again pushed wide.

Korea had just as many penetrations and Park Mi Hyun had a cracking tomahawk well saved by Rachael Lynch. A Korean penalty immediately after was a near perfect drag flick that hit the top post.

The game swung from end to end and Ashley Nelson brought the ball down the right, scooped it over a stick and orchestrated a penalty corner. A hard hit by Shelly Liddelow was saved by the goalie.

Australia seemed to have a little more freedom in attack and Munro and Catriona Bailey-Price looked dangerous.

With 6 minutes to go in the half a well timed pass to Park Mi Hyun was deflected by her to even the score. Almost immediately Australia had a penalty corner saved by the goalie.

With two minutes to go three Australian players brought the ball forward in the circle, all nearly scoring with the last lunge by Ashley Nelson deflected out. With thirty seconds to go Korner had only the goalie to beat but Park Jeong Sook deflected the ball away with a full body dive.

In the second half Australia had renewed energy and within two minutes a clever variation to the penalty corner was deflected in by Amy Korner.

Korea quickly had it at their end and two penalties and both were bravely saved the first Fiona Johnson. The third was well flicked by Lee Soo Kyung to even the score 2-2.

Soon after another penalty corner is again saved by the first runner Johnson. Korea then stepped up and the Australian backs were reassured with some great passing into the circle. Yet another penalty corner is again powered into the bottom right by Lee Soo Kyung.

Korea looked in control for the rest of the game. With ten minutes to go and in a narrow escape a cross to Kim Jong Hee was deflected just above the roof of the goal.

The Hockeyroos have had a huge task playing the many international games in Perth in the last month and tonight they looked tired.
