International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO): Open Letter to the Hockey Community from Gus Johnston

Posted May 17th 2012 by Hockey Victoria No Comments

Dear Hockey Community,

Thursday 17th May is International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO). Innovative projects like IDAHO and Fair go, sport! help promote diversity, inclusion and participation in sport and hopefully inspire new audiences to tackle discrimination in their communities. IDAHO and the Fair go, sport! project teach us many lessons about effecting cultural change – lessons which our clubs, administrators and players can apply within the sports environment.

Hockey Victoria is proud to be part of this year’s IDAHO celebration and we’re proud of our strong commitment to making Hockey more inclusive.

Fair go, sport! ambassador Gus Johnston has written an open letter to the Hockey community reflecting on the positive work that he has been doing in educating the wider community about the effects of homophobic behaviour, particularly in sport, and he challenges the Hockey community to think of ways that we can make Hockey a more inclusive sport.

Gus Johnston's open letter

I would like to personally thank Gus for the leadership role that he is taking to promote diversity and inclusion in Hockey and across all sports and I would encourage you to take the time to read his open letter and watch his YouTube video if you haven’t already done so. Gus is a positive role model for our sport and the personal experiences that he has shared are incredibly powerful.

Gus Johnston: The reality of homophobia in sport

During Round 13 of the 2012 season, Hockey Victoria will be inviting all clubs to participate in Fair go, sport! activities. Further details will be provided to affiliates in the coming weeks.

Ben Hartung
Chief Executive Officer
Hockey Victoria

An open letter by Gus Johnston

Dear Hockey Community,

I wanted to send you all a letter, and ask you a small favour.

Some of you will be aware that over the last 6 months I’ve been doing quite a bit of work to better educate the wider community about the effects of homophobic behavior, particularly in sport.

Some of you will also be aware that this process began for me late last year, when I spoke out about my personal experiences and my own reality of homophobia, via a clip on YouTube. The outpouring of positivity that resulted was extraordinary, not just from you - the hockey community - but from every conceivable sport and every imaginable walk of life.

It seems that my voice was heard across the globe, not just because I spoke, but because people wanted to listen. Because people needed to listen. Some needed to hear the harsh reality and consequence of sport’s ingrained passiveness, and at times active, discriminative homophobic behavior.  Other’s looked toward me in hope that they may see their own reflection, that they may, dare I say, see a role model.

Even now, it feels arrogant to refer to myself in that way, as a role model, but the reality is, that’s what we all are, in one way or another.

I think we all need to accept the responsibility and at times burden that comes with being the member of any community, not just a sporting one. We are all role models and we can all have a massive impact on one another’s lives. Both positively and negatively.

Tomorrow is a global event called IDAHO, which is the International Day Against Homophobia. Now, I don’t expect you all to jump up and wave flags and clap your hands to mark this day, but as members of this amazing community we call Hockey, I hope that you all might take tomorrow as an opportunity to think about how you can be a better role model for others.  How can you set a better example for those around you, to help make Hockey a more inclusive and diverse sport?

It might be simply posting something on your facebook wall that tells your friends what you think about homophobia. It might be telling one of your team mates at training on Thursday night to pull their head in if they say something you think is out of line. Or, it might be by taking a moment to reflect about any of the countless young men and women who contact me each week searching for purpose, afraid of who they are, what others might think of them and whether life is actually worth living.

I definitely think it is. I love hockey too much to simply ignore its inadequacies and walk away, which is why I will continue to be a role model. And I hope that you join me too. Tomorrow, let’s set an example in any way we can to the rest of the sporting community. And indeed the world.

Gus Johnston

Ford Celebrates 100 Caps as Kookaburras win series

Posted May 17th 2012 by Hockey Victoria No Comments

A special congratulations to Victorian Russell Ford, who brought up his 100th international cap stylishly, as the Kookaburras secured a series win over Germany.

The Kookaburras have ended their European tour on a positive note securing a 2-0 series win against Germany in Mannheim, downing the homeside 2-1.

The Australians defeated the world number two in testing conditions, backing up a 3-0 win in the first test match on Tuesday.

Jamie Dwyer, Luke Doerner and Matt Gohdes were rested for the second test with Chris Ciriello, Glenn Simpson and Russell Ford returning to the fold.

Likewise, Germany made changes with Moritz Furste, Phillip Zeller and Matthias Witthaus not playing.

The Kookaburras showed their positive intent, by forcing an early penalty corner through Russell Ford, who was playing in his 100th test match. The drag flick by Kieran Govers was saved and a follow up play could not quite force the first goal.

As the first half progressed, the Kookaburras started to dominate possession but were also solid in defence and did not allow Germany any clear opportunities on goal.

The Kookaburras did not have to wait long to take a well deserved lead, as Eddie Ockenden forced a second penalty corner on 13 minutes with Chris Ciriello converting a drag flick into the top left corner, past German goalkeeper, Weinhold.
The Australians intensity lifted and although they went into half time with a slender 1-0 lead, it could quite easily have been more as a Des Abbott shot was saved just before the break.

As expected, Germany came out firing in the second and exerted early pressure but the Australian defensive group were resilient and repelled two German penalty corners at the 42 and 43 minute mark.

Gradually the Kookaburras found more momentum and Ford forced another corner in the 56th minute. This time it was Kieran Govers who converted with a low drag flick to make it 2-0 in his 50th Test.

Florian Fuchs stole a goal back with 10 minutes to go after the ball could not be cleared cleanly but it was too little too late for the home team as the Kookaburras comfortably held on for the win.

Coach Ric Charlesworth said on a cool evening and in difficult playing and umpiring conditions, the team played with real intensity.

"Our corner conversion improved over these two matches here in Mannheim, we have produced two very solid defensive displays," he said. "I am proud of the intensity and everyone contributed to this series win."

The Kookaburras depart Germany tonight to return to Australia and have a well earned rest next week, before preparing for the upcoming series against Korea in June.

GOALS:
Chris Ciriello(AUS) PC 13m, Kieran Govers(AUS) PC 56m, Fuchs(GER) FG 60m.

La Trobe University Hockey Club Celebrates 45 Years in Style

Posted May 14th 2012 by Hockey Victoria No Comments

Over 100 people crowded into the White Rose Reception Centre on Saturday night the 05th of May to celebrate 45 years for the mighty La Trobe University Hockey Club, the ‘Gunners’

The Club was joined on the night by Club Patron and Member for Bundoora, Colin Brooks MLA, also Member for Northern Metropolitan, Jenny Mikakos MLC and Ben Hartung, CEO of Hockey Victoria.

“We greatly appreciated Colin, Jenny and Ben joining us to celebrate a great milestone for our club” President Zac Martin said.

“We are the largest competitive sporting club at La Trobe University, we have over 15 registered competitive teams who participate in active competitions with Hockey Victoria each weekend, this includes 5 senior Women’s teams, 6 senior Men’s teams, Masters teams and Junior’s teams.

“It is an outstanding testament to Hockey at La Trobe University that our Women’s 1’s XI compete in the State League 2 Division in Victoria, higher than both Melbourne and Monash University”

The night celebrated the great careers of a number of club stalwarts. Greg Van Meeuwen, who has recently been selected to compete for Australia in the Masters Games in Manchester England, was made the 15th Life member of the Club.

In addition Ross Erickson ‘the father’ of the club, was made the first ever recipient of the ‘President’s Plate’ an award that recognises Ross’s 40 years of continued service to the club, starting back when he was a student in the early 70’s.

“The club is the biggest and most successful it has ever been in its history, we have a record number of women playing and a record number of students, we  greatly appreciate all the assistance we receive from the University and most particularly the staff at the La Trobe Sports Centre.” Said Mr Martin.

“We look forward in the next 12 months to securing a new hockey turf on campus at La Trobe and working together with Melbourne Heart FC to provide a sports hub at the University for Students and the local community”.

Goals from Ciriello and Ford Secure Kookaburras Second Win Over Belgium

Posted May 14th 2012 by Hockey Victoria No Comments

THE Kookaburras completed what coach Ric Charlesworth called their “refuelling stop” in Belgium overnight with a 5-1 victory over the host nation in the second of two test matches.

Following on from their 8-2 win on Wednesday night, the Australians mixed and matched through the lines, converting three corners and adding two field goals.

The result enables them to move onto the rather sterner challenge ahead in Germany next week with renewed confidence.

“It was a tough game but it was a good refuelling stop to go on to Germany,” said Charlesworth. “We were solid and our corners were pleasing but we weren’t emphatic.”

Mark Knowles opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a field goal, Australia’s only reward during a tight first half.

However two goals just after the interval put the Kookaburras in the driving seat, Russell Ford following up from a corner for the first and Kieran Govers converting Australia’s fourth penalty corner for the second.

Des Abbott made it 4-0 from open play in the 50th minute before Belgium’s corner master Tom Boon grabbed a consolation for an under-strength home side two minutes later. A Chris Ciriello corner wrapped up the result for the Kookaburras on the hour.

The Australians have not had an easy time over the last three weeks, losing Graeme Begbie and Rob Hammond to injury and yesterday assistant coach Graham Reid flew home following the death of his father.

For the remaining players and staff, selection pressures are rising with the Olympics only seven weeks away.

“Selection is hard but we just have to deal with it, every other team is affected by it as well. Germany, Great Britain are dealing with it too, not just us," Charlesworth said.

"Some teams may have decided already but I’m not sure that would be healthy, so I’d prefer to be in this situation where we are testing things out, for example, we have used our entire corner hierarchy.

“Of course it means that the players can wax and wane but the reality is that it is going to be that way over the next couple of months.”

The Kookaburras now head over the border to Mannheim for two days of training and then two tests against Germany next week.

They will be hoping for revenge after successive defeats to the World’s No 2 nation at the Olympic Test Event in London.

Goals:
Mark Knowles(AUS) FG 10m, Russell Ford(AUS) PC 37m, Kieran Govers(AUS) PC 40m, Des Abbott(AUS) FG 50m, Boon(BEL) PC 50m, Chris Ciriello (AUS) PC 60m.
