JOHN MOWAT ACCEPTS ROLE AS SOUTHERN UNITED HOCKEY ACADEMY HEAD COACH
Posted September 2nd 2010 by Hockey Victoria No Comments
Southern United Hockey Club (SUHC) is pleased to announce that John Mowat has agreed to the role of Head Coach of the Southern United Hockey Academy (SUHA) for three years beginning in November 2010. John recently completed 10 years as the Head Coach of the Victoria Institute of Sport Men’s Hockey program that followed 10 years as Head Coach of the Women’s program.
SUHA will be an elite coaching program for field players designed to create and foster a culture of hockey excellence and high achievement within the Southern United Hockey Club in order to achieve future sustained success at Men’s and Women’s State League level. Those selected in SUHA will be young players of both sexes who have demonstrated potential to excel at State League One level and above and are registered to play with Southern United as at November 1 2010.
The program will be conducted from November to July each year and will consist of 5 groups each with a maximum of 10 participants, with players streamed by current playing capacity, age and ability. Coaching sessions will be conducted weekly at Southern United’s Farm Road Cheltenham facility during the months of November, December, February, March and periodically during April to July.
Hockey Victoria’s Operations Manager Andrew Skillern is excited about the new program.
‘It’s exciting to see a club have a vision and a purpose. The academy will assist the club in retention of their elite players and be the platform to a sustainable future in the elite competition here in Victoria and we wish Southern United Hockey Club all the best with the program over the next three years”, said Andrew Skillern.
John Mowat will work with each group utilising carefully chosen activities, drills and modified game situations to deliver a program designed to improve and where possible, perfect each player’s technical, awareness and thinking/decision making skills.
Southern United Hockey Club’s President David Finlayson is thrilled to have a coach of Mowat’s caliber at the club.
“We are delighted that a coach of such standing within the hockey community has chosen to join with our club to assist us in delivering on our long term vision of sustainable success at the top levels of both men’s and women’s hockey.
“This elite program will complement our current coaching programs including the highly successful McKenzie’s Clinics which were conducted at the club last year by Olympic Gold medalist Travis Brooks, and are set down again for this coming October and November, this time under the direction of Australian under 21 player, Malcolm Kemp”, said Finlayson.
John Mowat will begin his tenure at SUHC at the beginning of November 2010.
“I’m very excited about taking on the role as head coach of the Academy and to be associated with the Southern United Hockey Club which has demonstrated to me a very clear commitment to the long term development of its players and future success as a club”, said Mowat.
For inquiries in relation to the Southern United Hockey Academy (SUHA), or if you would like to receive an information pack and application form please contact the club at secretary@suhc.com.au.

Hockeyroos remain undefeated at the World Cup
Posted September 2nd 2010 by Hockey Victoria No CommentsHockeyroos remain undefeated at the World Cup
Hockeyroos 6 def. India 3 (2-1 half time)
Goals – Aus Blyth 17m FG, Ind Rani 30m FG/ 42m FG, Aus Nelson 34m FG/ 58m FG, Aus Eastham 53m FG, Aus Arrold 55m PC, Ind Rampal 62m FG, Aus Liddelow 64m FG
The Hockeyroos have produced an impressive performance against India to win their second game of the World Cup in Argentina and remain undefeated.
Facing a determined India who were hell bent to make amends after their embarrassing 7-1 opening match loss against the Netherlands, the Hockeyroos were challenged many times throughout the match but responded well each time.
Looking to add to the momentum they received after their round 1 win over Japan, it was only a few minutes into the match before Australia appeared well in control and generated their first scoring opportunity after receiving a penalty corner. The shot was taken by Nicole Arrold and followed up by Casey Eastham who delivered an on target shot on goal, with the Indian goalkeeper making a last second stop by outstretching her stick to deny the goal.
Australia continued to control the ball in the midfield and were given another opportunity to score only moments later when captain Madonna Blyth trapped the ball in the circle just in front of the goalkeeper, showed a great deal of composure and put the ball in the back of the net to give the Hockeyroos an early lead.
The Hockeyroos continued to generate scoring opportunities however were unable to convert their good play to scoreboard pressure.
This allowed India to work their way back into the game, seemingly motivated since conceding the goal.
Eventually their ball possession and attack increased, placing the Hockeyroos defence under great pressure which eventually resulted in a goal to draw the game.
With only minutes remaining in the half the Hockeyroos received another opportunity with a penalty corner. Although the initial push was mistrapped, Australia managed to work the ball into the circle with Ashleigh Nelson swooping on the ball to make it 2-1 just prior to half time.
Despite Australia’s best efforts India scored the opening goal of the second half, once again drawing the match with the momentum seemingly going in India’s direction.
Things became even more difficult for Australia when key player Madonna Blyth left the pitch injured.
This created an opportunity for Casey Eastham to step up and play an important role in the midfield. She was quite to assert herself, scoring the goal of the match after finding some space in the circle before delivering a lightening fast shot on goal to again give Australia the lead.
The Hockeyroos were dominant throughout the next ten minutes, scoring twice more to establish an unbeatable lead with Eastham having a hand in both goals.
Although Australia conceded a goal at the 62 minute mark, Shelly Liddelow ensured that the Hockeyroos ended the match of a positive note, scoring their 6th goal at the 64 minute mark.
“We are pleased to come away with the points but I am a bit disappointed that we let three goals in and I’m disappointed that we didn’t convert some opportunities early, but I am certainly happy to get the three points,” said Hockeyroos coach Frank Murray.
Murray also highlighted the importance of Casey Eastham’s performance after losing Madonna Blyth to injury.
“I think that you saw today that when Madonna got hurt and had to leave the field that Casey stepped up and made a big difference. To loss Munro out of our midfield (retired prior to tournament) and to loss Madonna today it makes it more difficult but as we saw Casey was involved in three of the goal. But hopefully Madonna will be ok for the next game,” said Murray.
Eastham said the team will take confidence for the way they scored their goals after half time.
“Obviously its great to get the first two wins. We have come hard matches coming up so winning these games helps and gives us more confidence throughout the rest of the tournament,” said Eastham.

HOCKEY AUSTRALIA MEDIA RELEASE
Wednesday 1 September
Kookaburras aim to keep winning streak alive in Delhi
A formidable 16-player Australian men’s hockey team announced today will look to continue their winning streak and keep their perfect Commonwealth Games record in tact when they journey to Delhi this October.
The Kookaburras will enter the 2010 Commonwealth Games as favourites and one of Australia’s most successful teams having only ever lost one match and claiming every gold medal since hockey was introduced in 1998.
The Kookaburras have won every major international tournament since the appointment of coach Ric Charlesworth in January 2009. Having already won the 2010 World Cup earlier this year and the 2010 Champions Trophy in early August, the Kookaburras have been unstoppable in 2010, and will be looking to finish the year off strongly with another Commonwealth Games gold medal.
However Charlesworth was quick to point out that the Australians will not underestimate any team at the Commonwealth Games.
“We have had some great results over the past 20 months or so, however I still believe we are not solid yet and still have much to do. I have full confidence in the team we have selected as it has a good amount of experience and youth, however we will not get ahead of ourselves,” said Charlesworth.
Eleven members of the squad will make their Commonwealth Games debut. Queenslanders Jamie Dwyer and Liam de Young have been selected to compete in their third Games, whilst Luke Doerner (VIC), Robert Hammond (QLD) and Mark Knowles (QLD) also represented Australia at the Melbourne Games in 2006.
Veterans De Young, Knowles and Hammond return to the Kookaburras line up having missed selection for the 2010 Champions Trophy.
Despite having the youngest team at the Champions Trophy, the Kookaburras went through the tournament undefeated and won their third Champions Trophy title in a row, giving the team a great amount of confidence leading into the Commonwealth Games.
Youngsters Jason Wilson, Chris Ciriello and Joel Carroll have held their spot and will be looking to further establish themselves at the Commonwealth Games.
“We have great squad depth which is obviously what we are building towards, however it means that players need to make the most of their opportunities and the Commonwealth Games will give these players a chance to do that on a very big international stage,” said Charlesworth.
However Charlesworth said that there are some very capable teams who would be looking to knock off the all conquering Australian team.
“We are the number 1 ranked team in the world, but I think that can give teams a bit more incentive when they face us. England are very capable of beating us as we saw at the World Cup. India and Pakistan will be at home in the Heat of Delhi and with the reduced squad sizes makes things less predictable,” said Charlesworth.
ACGA Chief Executive Officer Perry Crosswhite said, “We have high expectations for our 2010 Commonwealth Games men’s hockey team just as we have had at all three previous Games where the sport was played.
“It will not be easy but we know that if they do their best, as they did in 1998, 2002 and 2006, the 2010 Games tournament will be their hat trick for the year.”
The Delhi 2010 hockey competition will be held at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium from October 4 – 14, 2010.
Please note: The Australian women’s hockey team will be announced in mid-September following their World Cup campaign in Argentina

Hockeyroos make perfect start to the World Cup
Posted August 31st 2010 by Hockey Victoria No CommentsHockeyroos 2 def. Japan 1 (1-0 half time)
The Hockeyroos have begun their World Cup campaign in the best possible way, defeating a determined Japan 2-1 in their opening game today in Argentina.
It took time for both teams to settle into the match, something which was understandable for the Hockeyroos given that so many players were making their World Cup debut.
However as the first half progressed the Hockeyroos continued to grow in confidence, taking their first penalty within the first ten minutes. The shot was taken by veteran Nicole Arrold and almost deflected in by 2009 Young World Player of the Year Casey Eastham, with the shot beating the goalkeeper by travelling just wide of the goal.
The Hockeyroos made amends during their next penalty corner only a few minutes later, with Kobie McGurk taking the hit and beating an outstretched keeper who could do nothing but watch the ball sail over her head and give Australia the lead.
Australia looked as though it had extended its lead with seven minutes remaining in the half when captain Madonna Blyth pounced on a loose ball in the circle and delivered a diving shot, only to travel just wide of the goal once again.
Japan took to the field desperate to make amends in the second half and started the better of the two teams. However Australia’s defence, lead well by Nicole Arrold, Kobie McGurk and goalkeeper Rachael Lynch were able to withstand the pressure.
The game seemed over when Blyth scored Australia’s second goal with only 8 minutes remaining after beating the keeper one on one, but a goal to Japan less than a minute later brought it back to a one goal game.
Japan were desperate in the dying minutes however Australia were able to hang on and get an important first win, with coach Frank Murray praising his veterans.
"We started to get on top as the game went on. Some of the players who have had World Cup experience started to find their feet. We made three or four really good opportunities in the second half which we didnt convert, which was disappointing. We gave away a soft goal at the end but in the end im quite happy for a first up game," said Murray.
Captain Madonna Blyth said the teams ability to hang on under pressure towards the end of the game will give the team confidence throughout the remainder of the tournament.
"I think it gives us a bit of confidence that we can hang onto leads in pressure situations. We do have a few first timers here at the World Cup, there is only five of us who have played at the World Cup before so i think for them to experience that pressure in the first game can only build on our confidence," said Blyth.
The Hockeyoos will next play India on Thursday 2 September.

HOCKEY VICTORIA OFFICIALS RECOGNISED NATIONALLY
Posted August 31st 2010 by Hockey Victoria No CommentsHockey Victoria is pleased to congratulate three Victorian officials who have been recognised Nationally for their officiating achievements.
Dallas Riseley has received the prestigious award of Hockey Australia Official of the Year for 2009. Dallas has been actively involved in officiating within Australia at national and international levels for some time, but in particular in 2009, his achievements are significant.
These include:
• Technical Official- Junior World Cup 2009
• Technical Official- Champions Trophy – Melbourne 2009
• Tournament Director- AHL
Dallas’s ongoing contribution to development of officiating in Australia is significant and is congratulated for this outstanding achievement.
Another Victorian official-Mick McLean was recently awarded an Australia Badge for his umpiring achievements at the Under 21 Nationals in Melbourne.
Mick umpired juniors for three years aged 15-18, and then started umpiring again at 23years when he claims “it was punishment for being sent off twice in one match.
The old man made me umpire a senior match. It was the first time I really appreciated what an umpire had to do.
I really enjoy having the opportunity to be out on the field with really good players.”
Mclean hopes to continue officiating at the highest level possible.
The third Victorian who has been recognised nationally is Anthony Trail who was rewarded for his umpiring efforts by being rostered as one of the umpires in the AHL finals series in Brisbane last week. Anthony continues to develop his umpiring both at State and National levels and is a well respected and wonderful mentor for many up and coming umpires.
These officials along with the appointments of 17 other Victorian Officials at National Championships in 2010, is a credit to the efforts of both the officials themselves, and the many hours and behind the scenes work of the Umpire coaches and mentors.
