SL 1 women round 12 match report

Posted July 21st 2010 by Carly Eastman No Comments

Waverley hosted Greensborough for round 12.

Even though the end result was not the win Waverley wanted, the crowd appeared to be enjoying the game.

A loss for Greensborough would most likely take them out of finals contention for 2010. However a hard fought draw has seen them keep their finals chances alive.

Waverley went 2-0 up early in the first half and Waverley Captain Renee Trost assisted both goals. The first goal saw Trost run the ball down the right to find Kirsty Sheppard in good position in the circle, Sheppard had a shot which was saved by the Greensborough keeper, Eliza Larter pounced on the rebound, passed back to Sheppard who scored Waverley’s first goal.

The second goal stared from the left half defence. Johnstone passed the ball to Eastman at full back, Eastman passed the ball to the right side attack where Trost and Larter combined to run the ball into the circle, Trost ran the ball along the backline to find Sheppard on the spot who scored her second goal for the game.

The home side mid-field continued to make interceptions and probably should have created more from numerous dangerous breaks, but Greensborough weathered the storm and looked to hit Waverley on the break away, especially utilising the dangerous pace of Riordon up forward.

Greensborough’s first goal came from what can only be described as a gift, Waverley’s deep defence caught on the back foot and the dangerous Riordon pounced, slamming the ball past the Waverley keeper Sue-Anne Hocking.

Approaching the half time break Greensborough scored again this time through a penalty corner.

The home side came out firing in the second half, creating lots of chances to penetrate the circle and Waverley’s third goal came from Kirsten Thompson passing the ball into Price, who was in great position to slot the ball passed the keeper.

Waverley scored again shortly after, but a moment of madness handed the advantage to Greensborough. A straight shot was taken on a penalty corner and a goal was awarded after it appeared the ball deflected off the keeper’s pads, however Greensborough appealed for the decision to be reversed claiming the shot was too high. After consultation the umpires agreed the shot was too high and a free hit was awarded to Greensborough.

With the match finely balanced, Greensborough scored the equaliser to go 3 all where the score line remained.

Womens SL1 match report v Hawthorn

Posted July 12th 2010 by Carly Eastman No Comments

Waverley moved clear to the top of the table with a good 2-0 nil over Hawthorn on a very windy Saturday.

The conditions were not ideal and thankfully the Panthers played into the wind in the first half.

The big difference between the two teams on the weekend was the form of Victorian representative players taking the field. Emily Paton and Leah Merrett from Waverley were dominating the middle of the pitch closing down Hawthorn’s Australian player, Kary Chau.

Hawthorn won the first penalty corner for the match, they looked for a deflection but Eastman and Paton had the goal covered and saw the ball over the backline. After a few scares, Waverley were soon creating chances down the other end of the pitch.

Waverley’s first goal came from a penalty corner variation, Alex Watson finding herself in space in the circle to casually slip the ball passed the Hawthorn goal keeper.

Hawthorn continued to apply pressure and were looking for balls through to their very quick moving strikers, however Lucy Young and Lauren Law playing as flank halves were superbly snuffing out any threat.

Renee Trost was having a cracking game for the Panthers, even though she was being tagged her skill and pace showed why she is one of the top players in the competition. Trost moved the ball forward to find Kirsten Thompson in the circle. Thompson’s patience with the ball was rewarded with a penalty corner. This time the ball was passed to Paton on the left who scored Waverley’s second goal for the game.

The second half started with Hawthorn’s midfeld working harder to maintain possession of the ball, however they still could not find the elusive final pass and Waverley’s deep defence was never really tested.

Waverley continued to create more chances to score and looked dangerous on several occasions, however they could not add to their tally for the day.

Hawthorn’s best chance to score came when Eastman was harshly shown a yellow card and Waverley were reduced to 10 players, however the Panthers stood strong and showed why they are real contenders in 2010.

SL 1 women round 9 match report

Posted June 24th 2010 by Carly Eastman 1 Comment

Round 9 top of the table clash saw the Waverley women host old rivals Essendon.

The Panthers were happy to have their two AHL Viper players back in the team for the top of the table clash. Leah Merrett and Emily Paton returned into the squad after AHL duties.

The game started evenly with great battles in the mid-field. Waverley’s midfield duo of Renee Trost and Leah Merrett were controlling the play looking for passes to roaming strikers, Price, Larter and Young.

Waverley’s player of the match Trost was in imperious form her skill and work rate always kept the visitors on the back foot.

Waverley finally found the key to unlock the Essendon defence. Some persistent work from Eliza Larter up front saw her steal the ball from the Essendon deep defence, the ball went into the circle where an Essendon player fouled and a penalty corner was given.

The corner variation saw the ball passed to Leah Merrett on the left who scored for the home side.

Essendon looked to counter attack and their experienced striker, Jo Grunden was looking dangerous up front.

Essendon’s midfield players were using the play on rule to their advantage and Kristy Sheppard found herself not moving 5 yards from a free hit. Sheppard was given a yellow card.

Essendon broke through with the equaliser, the ball being played into the circle from deep in their right side attack where an unmarked Essendon striker was there to pounce.

Essendon’s experienced players started to use physical presence to dominate the rest of the first half and they were not disappointed when Sheppard clattered in with a sloppy tackle and was awarded her second card for the game. This time a green card was shown.

The rest of the home sides defence were not intimidated and stood their ground. Christine Johnstone in particular enjoying her role in closing down the Essendon right side attack.

As half time approached Waverley had cause to thank their goalkeeper Sue-Anne Hocking, an Essendon striker had a powerful shot at goal which Hocking was able to reach and clear the ball to safety.

With that let off running through their minds Waverley used half time to re-group and reaffirm tactics that working in the opening 15 minutes of the game.

The second half did not start to plan as it was Essendon that started the brighter forcing some early attack.

The Essendon midfielders were working tirelessly to get their strikers the ball.

Merrett at inside left and Johnstone at left half started to combine superbly midway through the 2nd half, their defensive roles causing havoc to any plans Essendon had of attacking down their right.

The home side were determined to get something out of the game and poured forward. Lucy Young at centre forward found herself in the right place at the right time and got her stick on the ball to score Waverley’s second goal for the game.

The visitors now knew they needed to chase the game and despite several circle penetrations, they could not find the break through.

Essendon’s best chance of scoring an equaliser came from undisciplined tackling, again from Kirsty Sheppard. This time Sheppard came in from behind and clumsily tackled the Essendon player. Could this be the rainbow of cards given to one player? No, it was another yellow card to Sheppard for the game.

The end result saw Waverley win their ninth consecutive game and continue their unbeaten 2010 record. But the team knows that there is work still to be done as the game was tight contest and could have gone either way.

Womens SL1 match report round 8

Posted June 9th 2010 by Carly Eastman 1 Comment

Waverley maintained top spot on the ladder and their undefeated 2010 season with a good 3-1 win over a struggling MCC on a cold and wet Saturday afternoon.

Waverley started the game a bit off the pace but within 5 minutes were soon moving the ball around with ease. Alex Watson leading from the back, combing with Eastman, Johnstone and Law on the half line. The defenders were switching the play looking for balls through to strikers Sheppard, Price and Larter.

The first half played out with no score, Waverley’s countless circle penetrations coming off with no reward.

The more frustrating aspect was that the Panthers were not making their opponents win the ball but were instead giving them the ball from naive passes and weak tackles.

Luckily for Waverley, Paula Diaz-Oliva was working tirelessly in her role as central defender. Making timely tackles.

In the second half once again Waverley controlled the play in deep defence however could still not find the reward up front.

Whether complacency or tiredness set in it was hard to tell, but Waverley dropped off their work rate and to give the home side credit they sensed the change and took advantage. MCC were awarded a penalty corner for a lost tackle inside their circle, they scored first. A deflection coming from a Waverley defenders sticks.

The Panthers now looked stunned.

A few position changes were made. Kirsty Sheppard and Paula Diaz Oliva moved into the mid-field joining Kirsten Thompson. This allowed Captain Renee Trost to play on the forward line.

These changes soon paid off, the first goal coming from an Alex Watson strike on a penalty corner.

The second goal came from some great play from Nicole Price. Price tackled the MCC defender at the top of the circle. The ball spilled free and Kendall Trenberth got the ball, passed it back to Price who was standing in great position on the post to deflect the ball past the MCC keeper.

Waverley’s third goal came from Trost who received the ball at the attacking 25, ran into the circle beating an MCC defender and the Goal-keeper to seal the win for the Panthers.

Waverley should have added to their tally as the home side struggled to cope with the movement of the Waverley team.

Waverley now face a great challenge in round 9, we host Essendon at home who are placed 2nd on the ladder and have only lost one game.

Women’s 1’s make it 6 from 6

Posted May 27th 2010 by Carly Eastman 1 Comment

The Panthers took on SL1 2010 newcomers TEM for round 6. Even though TEM are new to SL1 and Waverley sit undefeated on top of the table, we knew that they had come away with some good results in their first few games, including beating two teams who finished in the top 4 in 2009.

Waverley coach Andrew Aldons was quick to remind the team before the game that it was not going to be an easy match.

And right he was, even though Waverley had the pushback for the start of the match, it was TEM who started the better of the two teams and put Waverley on the back foot. The Waverley deep defence were put to the test early on.

Christine Johnstone was leading the defence, snuffing out any threat and frustrating any plans TEM had of attacking down their right side.

Waverley stepped up the pace through Renee Trost and Kirsten Thompson in the mid-field and finally began to find some form up front. Trost was dominating at inside right. At one stage she picked up the ball and using her turn of speed, left her defender in her wake to drive the ball into the circle where she was eventually fouled by a TEM defender. Waverley was rewarded with the first penalty corner for the match.

Waverley’s hitter Alex Watson made no mistake and drilled the ball into the bottom left corner for Waverley to go 1 nil up.

With TEM now pressing for the equaliser, they started to shift the ball around with precision. And on the TEM double transfer, they found a long ball through to a striker who ran the ball into the circle to find a Waverley defenders foot, and a penalty corner was given.

The equaliser came from a variation to their L1 who slotted the ball into the bottom right.

Just before the half time break, Waverley found themselves with another penalty corner. This time Watson hit the ball to the bottom right, and just as it was looking like the ball might be missing to the right, Nicole Price came running in and with a diving effort saw the ball into the net for Waverley to go 2-1 up at the break.

The second half started with both teams coming out much stronger. It was a tough battle. The TEM side were disciplined in their press and Waverley were not finding it easy to penetrate their attacking circle.

Eastman and Watson with support from Johnstone and Thomson as the flank halves were more controlled coming out of defence, finding balls through the TEM lines on the double transfer.

Sheree Thomson was having a great second half, combing well with Trost at inside right and Price at right wing. The right sided trio were making some great plays into attack. Despite this, Waverley could not find the elusive final pass and TEM eventually found more time and space with the ball.

TEM earned a succession of penalty corners and their battery was looking dangerous. They found their second goal through another penalty corner, the initial save was made by Waverley keeper Sue-Anne Hocking. The Waverley defence were too slow to react and a TEM striker was there to pounce, finding the backboard to equalise the scores for the second time in the match.

It was another flash of brilliance from Captain Trost combining with Kirsty Sheppard that saw Waverley go 3-2 up. Trost casually beat the TEM defence to create a 2 on 1 with Sheppard. Sheppard’s shot was saved by the keeper, but Waverley’s Argentinean player, Paula Diaz-Oliva was there for the rebound; slotting the ball under the keeper for her first goal for the season and send her team mates into raptures.

Final Score

Wav 3 ; TEM 2

The Club Still Requires a Secretary – Urgently

Posted May 20th 2010 by Don Larter No Comments

You are all aware that after many years of service Brenda Powell has retired as club secretary.

To date no one has volunteered to take on the role.

Graham Eddy has been very kindly acting as treasurer AND secretary.

This is far too much work for one person.  A club the size of Waverley needs to spread the work load over a number of people.   We would be happy to have the job shared between one or two people.

On a similar note Graham requires an assistant to help him in his duties as treasurer.  The assistant would need only to complete administration tasks.

Please speak to any one on the committee.
