Vale Hedley Hull
Posted December 5, 2011 at 10:10 am by Travis BrooksIt is with great sadness that the club announces the passing of club founder and inspiration, Hedley Hull. The Waverley Hockey Club, Executive Committee, players, supporters and friends extend their heartfelt condolences to Hedley’s wife Claire, son Steve, Rosa and family.
Hedley was part of the original group of Elsternwick hockey club players living in the Waverley area that met in October 1958 to initiate the Mount Waverley Hockey Club. Hedley was a member of the single team entered by the Mount Waverley Hockey Club in its inaugural year and experienced premiership success over the next three seasons. As well as playing for the ‘firsts’, Hedley was instrumental behind the scenes in the club’s progress. He was heavily involved at committee level and took a positive role in umpiring following his playing days. There was not a year gone by that Hedley did not attend the club AGM, Presentation Night as well as being a regular fixture at home games.
Whilst Hedley’s achievements in the club and various hockey associations are well documented, it is Hedley’s commitment to the youth of the hockey community that will be well remembered by present day players. In a way, umpiring for Hedley was a metaphor for life, respect those around you, present yourself with humility and contribute to the betterment of the community.
The Waverley Hockey Club owes Hedley an immense debt of gratitude for his tireless contribution to the fabric of the club, without which we would not have the magnificent facilities we all enjoy today. It is a fitting legacy that we will all play on the Hedley Hull Field from this sad day forward.
