Indoor Super League reaches mid-way point

The Men’s and Women’s Super League Indoor competition reached its mid-way point this weekend with TEM  at the summit of the Men’s competition, while Mentone cemented its position at the top of the women’s with a 3-2 win over Waverley.

Mentone showed the strength of their team last night with an easy 10-3 win over last placed Essendon. Essendon were no match for the quick ball movement and structured play of the Mentone team. The win puts Mentone into third and just outside the top two, keeping their Final's hopes alive.

The Waverley verses Camberwell encounter was a much tighter affair with key players Tommy Allan and Danny Brennan trying to get their respective teams over the line. Allan was the first to score putting Camberwell in front early, however Waverley hit back quickly to equalise through Brennan from a corner. Brennan then scored the goal of the season so far with a powerful flick on the run, from the back line, over the shoulder of the Camberwell goalkeeper.

The game remained close with Waverley eventually winning 5-3. Brennan finishing with four goals and Allan with three.

TEM remains the only undefeated team in the Men’s completion after a solid 8-3 win over Doncaster in the final men’s match of the night. TEM showed its experience and versatility despite the very young age of the team.

Led from the back with outstanding games from Victorian Under 21 State Indoor Representatives, Adam Seccull, Ben Seccull and Johan Durst, Doncaster struggled to gain any real scoring opportunities in the first half. A large crowd was given a display of exciting indoor hockey with TEM scoring from a large variety of well executed field plays and corners.

In the women’s competition TEM bounced back from two disastrous weeks to defeat Doncaster 8-1. Four goals from Alice Tulluch setting up the win for the Lions and ensuring they keep one step ahead of the improving Bombers in the race to the finals.

TEM Coach, Hugh McLaughlin was happy with his girl’s performance, putting aside two weeks of disappointment and having gained a much needed win and confidence boost.

With only two points separating second and fifth, both Kewberwell and the Bombers were desperate to gain maximum points from their encounter. Under 18 State Indoor Representative Hayley Padget opened the scoring for the Bombers; however Kewberwell were quick to equalise; with the result hanging in the balance, Australian Indoor Team, Vice Captain, Erica Trahar scored twice to help guide the Bombers to their second win of the season.

In the final match of the night Waverley put in a strong performance against league leaders Mentone, but still came off second best with Mentone keeping their unbeaten record intact with a gritty 3-2 win.

Mentone started the better of the two teams scoring two first half goals; however a determined Waverley fought back in the second half scoring two goals of their own. With an upset looming Mentone refused to lay down with Australian Indoor Representative, Rebecca Coulson scoring the match winner just before full time.
