Waverley Hockey Club

Saddle up! We’re off to Albury.

With 3 very important points on the line the task of travelling the 4 hours by car on game day added an extra hurdle to overcome against a team that ‘grows a leg’ on their home ground.

Good preparation ensured the risks were minimised and the team was able to perform at the required level to get the job done.  Losing the toss but starting with the ball, the Panthers went straight into domination mode, attacking at will.  The Albury defence struggled to keep the Panthers out of the circle as the strikers got the scoreboard ticking over and before we knew it, 2 goals were on the board in quick succession.

Each time the Albury team ventured forward and lost the ball, they retracted into defensive,  setting up a guard at the halfway line.  This allowed Stephen Jarvis,  Matty Freeman and Tim Thompson to control the ball unpressured as the moved the team into attack.  By half time the scoreboard had ticked over to 4-0.

The second half was a slightly different contact, this time Albury pressured the Waverley team, not conceding the ground as they did in the first half.  The Panthers were still able to find their way to the back of the net though, as they bagged another 2 goals to set the scoreboard at 6-0.

A brilliant goal Albury centre forward Beath, saw a classy deflection sale over keeper Geoff Greaves head and into goal.

With time almost out, Waverley managed to sneak another goal in before the siren which saw the game end at a well executed 7-0 win.

Birthday boy Tim Thompson managed to celebrate his special day being gifted 2 goals by his team mates as presents.  Danny Brennan also snagged 2 handy goals with the following players scoring singles: Aaron Swindells with a cracking shot through the keepers legs, Jarrod Page with quite possibly the luckiest goal you could ever have scored after taking a handy deflection from the opposition and Travis Brooks who appears to have the inability to score on his forestick side lately.

All in all a successful trip to Albury to bring home the Chocolates.
