waverley a happy hunting ground
Posted May 1, 2006 at 1:07 pm by Rhys EddyHockey returned to Waverley this week for the first round of home games, and most teams were able to make the most of the advantage.
The first game of the round set the trend for the action to come, a comfortable 4-0 Waverley win over Frankston for Metro 3 East.
Meanwhile, in a land far, far away, the District 2 North ladies were having a tough time against Werribee. The end result, a 6-0 defeat and a hefty fuel bill for those concerned.
Back home, the men’s Pennant A team went to work on Kew. Aaron Swindells was ruthless in front of goals, taking any opportunity to test the back of the net en route to a hat trick. After being a spectator for most of the match Geoff Greaves was hoping to get a touch when one of the Kew forwards broke away down the left and snuck one inside the left post. The final score: a convincing 6-1.
Pennant C came up against a Brunswick side high on confidence after a 7-2 win in round 1. But Waverley, also coming off an impressive 5-2 victory, applied early pressure in attack and were rewarded with two goals from penalty strokes.
In the second half the game opened up. With space to move, Waverley began to open holes in the defence and created multiple scoring opportunities, 5-1 the result.
Having witnessed the previous two games, Metro 1 West was not going to be outdone. They followed up with another impressive 5-1 victory.
Waverley players then made a clean sweep of the day’s action at home, with Metro 2 East sneaking home against Eastern 3-2.
Cool air and grey skies greeted players and spectators on Sunday, and with the clouds seemingly a shade darker after Metro 3 South went down 9-0 in the first game of the day, it seemed like the weather was not the only potential concern for the Waverley crowd. However, they need not have worried, for it was now the women’s turn to taste home success. Pennant A was first up, opening their account for the season, overcoming a persistent Kew side 5-3. Waverley held the majority of possession, creating numerous chances and was unlucky not to increase their winning margin.
Pennant C women followed up with maximum points in a hard-fought 2-1 win over MCC. Michelle Tuhan was the star for Waverley, scoring both goals.
To finish of a fantastic weekend of hockey, District 2 South had a 2-1 victory over Sandringham.
8 wins out of 10, plenty of goals, not bad indeed.
