Waverley 0 defeated by Greensborough 6.

Greensborough handed the Panthers their departure ticket on Sunday with a 6 nil drumming at the State Hockey Centre in front of a large crowd, to end a great season in disappointing style.

After a promising season the Panthers were able to finish third and carried high hopes entering the finals. However, a well-versed Burra jumped the Panthers from the outset with an early goal leaving Waverley in a state of shell-shock.

Waverley courageously sought to fight back in the second half to reclaim the three goal deficit. However, the Panthers were unable to buy a goal on the day whilst Greensborough continued its march. Three goals in each half were more than enough to plummet the Panthers out of the finals race for 2009.

The season of 2009 has been exceedingly successful for a team who is looking to rebuild the invincible dynasty of old. The not so distant future looks bright with several young guns stepping up and becoming dominate within the team and Victorian hockey – whilst the older crew continues to provide invaluable experience and knowledge to an exciting lineup.

Finals would not have been possible without the efforts of Coach Brett Thompson whose experience has proved invaluable. Thanks must also go to Trav Brooks for ’specialist coaching’ throughout the year as well as Helen Joseph and Ken Moore for contributing their time and expertise to the team – the boys are forever thankful.

Great season boys.

Congratulations to the Pennant E boys who won their qualifying final 1-0 against Doncaster to catapult them straight into the Grand Final. This team has had considerable success over the previous years and will be looking to continue this in 2009. We will be down there supporting in 2 weeks!

Waverley 4 defeated TEM 1.

Round 18 progressed smoothly with the Panthers registering a comfortable win over relegation bound TEM at Hawthorn – The overall winner on the day was the Breast Cancer Awareness effort that was organized by TEM’s which was a sterling success with a large crowd turning out to support the initiative.

The match opened with an intense pace as each side pressed for that initial goal. After a 20 minute stale mate the Panther were finally able to convert through ‘old pro’ Wes Moore who burrowed the ball into the backboard from a well timed cross, his first of many for the day, 1-0 to Waverley.

Shortly after the ever dangerous Timmy Wischusen took advantage of his limited space with a spinning shot from the right finding the sideboard to register the scoreboard at 2-0 for the Panthers. The score remained at 2-0 thanks to some stern defending from Geoff Greaves and Jarrod Glasscock who was able to save a dragflick on the line late in the half.

With all going smoothly the Panther relaxed entering the second half and were punished when TEM’s Adam Seccull found the net with a dragflick from the penalty corner, 2-1. This strike roused the Panthers from their slumber who hit back promptly to snuff out any revival.

This assault was spearheaded by the ‘old brigade’ Wes Moore who found red-hot form with two goals to put the match beyond doubt. His second goal was extremely pleasing to the crowd after he stripped TEM’s Brenton Perry of the ball and continued a one-two combination with Sparrow Swindells through the middle to finally beat the TEM’s keeper placing the ball firmly into the goal, 3-1.

The final goal proved to be methodical for the Panthers with a run along the base line being fired across the goalmouth into the lap of Wes Moore who made no mistake. At the final whistle the scoreline stood at 4-1 to the Panthers – Wes with a hat-trick.

After a successful 18 rounds the Waverley Panthers sit firmly in third position and are now preparing for the finals. We will meet Greensborough in a cut-throat finals elimination round on Sunday starting at 2:30PM at the State Hockey Centre (S-1).

If there was ever a time to jump on the wagon and support the club it is now, all support on the day will be much appreciated and will certainly be a great occasion in our 50th year celebrations.

Further congratulations to all the Waverley teams who have made finals, especially to the Pennant E boys who were minor premiers in 2009 and will be justly promoted next season. Please support your club by getting out to as many games as you can!

Waverley 3 defeated Doncaster 2.

The Panthers stamped their authority on the State League 1 competition with a stirring win against top of the table Doncaster at the State Hockey Centre. The win ensures that Waverley will be part of the finals race in 2009 as well as retaining third spot on the ladder with one round left in the regular season.

Both teams found themselves with dangerous opportunities early in the match. However, it was the Panthers who were able to capitalize first whilst displaying their familiar attacking flair.

The unrelenting pressure imposed by Simon Preston was rewarded when he was able to strip Olympian Andrew Smith of the ball – he continued his characteristic run down the right wing and delivered a inch perfect pass to Sparrow who crashed the ball into the goal for a one nil lead, Waverley 1-0.

A lapse of concentration and discipline shortly after saw the Panthers reduced to nine men for a 10 minutes. This period proved to be very hard-fought as Waverley persistently repelled Doncasters’ attempts to draw back the scoreline. The Blue Boys defended solidly until the team was returned to full strength and continued this drive until half time where the score remained at 1-0.

Doncaster entered the second half with fire in their belly and quickly leveled the scores within the first five minutes from a deflection, 1-1. The Panthers awoke from their half-time slumber and an arm wrestle followed with the game in a state of suspense. The deadlock was broken by the hard working Tim Wischusen who was able to slide the ball past the keeper during a goal mouth scramble, 2-1.

Just as Waverley were beginning to take control it came crashing down with another professional foul seeing the Panthers down a man. During this time Doncaster bought themselves another goal with a desperate diving deflection finding the corner from a cross, 2-2.

With less than five minutes on the clock the Panthers reapplied its aggressive style of play and found themselves with a well constructed chain of passes ending with a short corner. Steve Jarvis took the reigns and found the back of the net with a well-timed dragflick, to continue his cracking form of late, to put Waverley in the drivers seat with a 3-2 scoreline.

The last two minutes proved frantic with Doncaster having nothing to lose. Waverley maintained its composure and iced the clock to ensure the three points at the end of the day with a 3-2 win at the final whistle.

Waverley will be looking to hit its straps against relegation bound TEM’s next week in preparation for finals and to finish third. The game starts at 3:30PM on Saturday at Hawthorn (H-1).

Waverley 2 defeated Essendon 1.

The Panthers escaped with a well fought win on Sunday against a resurgent Essendon outfit. The Essendon home ground has been a fortress of late with a string of high profile scalps – the Panthers approached knowing full well that it would be a scrappy event at Essendon, fueled by the bad blood held from the round 7 clash as well as the torrential rain leading up to the game.

The Panthers launched themselves into the match and exposed the shaky Essendon defence with two early attempts at goal which flew painfully wide of either post. The ascendancy of the panthers continued with numerous shots being supplied by Wes Moore’s and Simon Preston’s piercing runs along the wings.

Disappointingly, against the flow of play, Essendon were able to produce a short corner and finished a variation into the bottom left corner to begin the scoring, 0-1 to Essendon. The pace intensified and so did the amount of unnecessary turnovers that marred the match.

The Panthers quickly regrouped and were justly rewarded after Simon Preston delivered a dangerous pass to Sparrow Swindells who found the back of the net with a neat deflection to level the scores at one a piece, 1-1.

Essendon refused to lay down and were awarded a penalty corner after a quick breakaway. The Waverley crowd were relieved when the low flick variation to the left deflected off the left post and was promptly cleared out of the circle.

The old brigade struck gold again when a dismal Essendon effort to clear the ball found a diving Wes Moore who slotted a blistering shot to the right sideboard of the goal - Panthers went into the half time break with a 2-1 lead.

A 2-1 scoreline is renowned for being a dangerous position for a leading team and Waverley knew the perils if they did not score the next goal. However, a desperate Essendon claimed a goal from the top of the circle which was later disallowed for being hit outside – luckily for the Panthers.

Both teams had their chances to take the game by the scruff of the neck yet neither were able to produce any further scoreboard pressure. The end score remaining at 2-1 with Waverley leaving with the chocolates.

Waverley (3rd) will need to regain its composure in lead-up to the match against first placed Doncaster and will be a telling game in the race for a finals berth. The game starts at 2:15PM on Saturday at State Hockey Centre (S-2).

The Panthers fell victim to an always dangerous Altona on the weekend at Ashwood Reserve. The match reminded everyone of the evenness in the State League One competition and the ability of any team being able to win on the day.

Waverley’s intensity from the outset was a highlight in a high-paced and passionate game against a ‘shin-boner’ Altona. Yet an inability to find the back of the net was a telling blow to the outcome of the match for the Panthers.

Within the first ten minutes of the match the Panthers had conjured up three penalty corners and several goal scoring positions that went begging time and time again. Waverley constantly pressed its agenda on the desperate Altona who repelled a barrage of offensive runs.

A controlling and frustrated Waverley held majority of play but were unable to convert which left the game in limbo with both teams heading into the half time break 0-0.

The start of the second half saw the level of play lift a notch as the teams fought for the points. With the increase in pace came a renewed sense of urgency resulting in a number of corners which just fell wide or were saved by the Altona keeper who was on fire.

The Waverley crowd were silenced in the 20th minute of the second half with Altona scoring an opportunistic straight shot goal resultant of an earlier turnover, 0-1 to Altona. Shortly after an Altona player spent time behind the net for a string of errant tackles, yet the Panthers failed to capitalize on the vulnerable Altona team.

It was not to be the Panthers day with a flurry of offensive activity in the last ten minutes being unsuccessful and Altona running out eventual winners with the one goal on the board.

Waverley maintains third spot but has missed a vital opportunity to gain ground for the top two spot. Waverley must now travel to meet Essendon who are fighting to stay out of relegation. The game starts at 2:00PM on Sunday at Essendon (ES1).

The Waverley Men’s State League 1 season gained further momentum on the weekend after drumming last placed SUHC at the State Hockey Centre. The demolition of SUHC is a welcome relief in what is always a danger game against the unpredictable cellar dwellers.

Southern United is renowned for its very frustrating flooding and counter tactics, yet Waverley were up to the challenge and thoroughly controlled the game from start to finish. The only blemish came in the first ten minutes of the game with an awkward penalty stroke being awarded to SUHC who converted to register the first goal for the day, 0-1 lead to Southern United.

After an embarrassing start the Panthers kicked off proceedings through Tim Wischusen who found the side board with a one-time spinning shot, 1-1. The second goal came shortly after with Sparrow Swindells hungrily slotting his first for the day, 2-1. Waverley continued its patient assault on United’s cracking defence – a final push before half time saw SL1 stalwart Wes Moore crack a thunderbolt into the backboard to take the Panthers to a 3-1 lead at half time.

The Panthers recognized the dangerous scoreline and entered the second half at full steam intent on snuffing out any hope for SUHC. The Panthers hit hard and within the first five minutes Sparrow swooped on his second for the day finding the corner from the spot, 4-1. The next 30 minutes were a brilliant display of hockey as Waverley dominated possession and offensive play.

As Waverley dictated play the floodgates opened with a string of short corners being slammed home everywhere. Sparrow bagged another two from deflections as well as another for Wes Moore, 7-1. Two highlights late in the game came from the young stars in the team.

The first highlight came from a brilliant buildup play resulting in Jarvis firing a pass to Luke Young on top of the circle who one-timed a rocket over the goalies shoulder, 8-1. Jarvis added himself to the highlight reel again converting a corner with a sharp dragflick to the top corner netting to finish the scores at 9-1 to the rampant Panthers.

The strength of form throughout the field was impressive as the team simultaneously clicked, yet it was Stephen Jarvis and Tim Thompson who really stood out on the day playing pivotal roles in the game, along with the always consistent captain Corey Joseph.

The Panthers still sit in third position and will now host Altona at Ashwood Reserve. Waverley vs. Altona at Ashwood Reserve this Sunday beginning at 2:00pm. Get on down to the club to watch an always passionate and skillful game between the two sides whilst enjoying a great day at the club.

Waverley 5 defeated Hawthorn 4.

The Panthers hosted Hawthorn at Ashwood in hunt for their next win to reinforce its claim as a genuine finals contender in 2009. A plethora of past events between the two teams set the stage for a heated contest with the Panthers looking to avenge the heart-breaking loss from round 4.

Waverley carried last weeks aggressive attitude into the game and consequently dominated Hawthorn from the outset with an exciting brand of hockey. A well structured Waverley continuously tore through the Hawks defence with pace creating several extremely early chances at the net. However, it was Nick Dallimore who seized the opener with a well placed slap from the spot to open a 1-0 account to Waverley.

The early goal bought a surge of confidence through the team spawning an offensive frenzy in true Panther fashion. A barrage of shots were supplied by Tim Thompson, in the middle, who was able to find plenty of penetrating forward passes. Waverley were rewarded with two goals in quick succession; first a clinical finish by Luke Young whilst the second was delivered by Danny Brennan who completed a magnificent solo run by roofing the ball into the top netting, 3-0 to Waverley.

However, the game met a critical point when Waverley found themselves down a man after a professional foul received a yellow card. The Panthers scrambled hard in defence during the period yet an unmarked Hawthorn player found some space to cross the goal which was deflected for their first goal, 3-1. Hawthorn continued its pressure and were awarded a penalty corner in the dying minutes which was hit from the battery. With that hit Waverley had let Hawthorn back into the game 3-2 at the half time whistle.

The Panthers regrouped in the second half knowing what was required and demanded it from each other. The rise in intensity returned several opportunities early in the second half, Stephen Jarvis steadied the game with a drag flick finding the backboard from a penalty corner, 4-2. Shortly after a brilliant display of skill and determination was encountered by all when Tim Wischusen pick pocketed a defender beat another two and passed to Danny Brennan who finished to take Waverley to a 5-2 lead.

In spite of this Waverley let itself down in the last 15 minutes of the match with two Waverley players receiving yellow cards. During this time Hawthorn were able to claw back two soft goals but ran out of time after Waverley calmly possessed the ball in the dying minutes, final score 5-4 to Waverley with Tim Thompson having a first-class game at centre half.

The Panthers will remain in third spot but have gained ground on top spot which is only 4 points away. We must now meet cellar dwellers Southern United in a game that will test our discipline.
Waverley vs. Southern United at State Hockey Centre (Pitch 2) this Sunday beginning at 12:40pm. All support from Waverley members is always greatly appreciated!

Waverley 5 drew with Greensborough 5.

The Panthers exemplified courage on Saturday out at Greensborough after staging a momentus comeback in the last 10 minutes of the game to silence the Burra crowd.

Greensborough entered the game sore after playing their third game in a week due to a rescheduled mid-week catch up against Southern United. The Panthers took full advantage and hit the Burra hard from the outset with gut running and piercing passes. An early chance for the Panthers came about when a Tim Thompson pass found an unmarked Luke Young, however the chance went begging when Young’s usual bread and butter tomahawk went soaring over the crossbar.

Yet again the lack of scoreboard pressure meant Greensborough were able to work itself into the game and turn the tide. As the deadlock continued an unlikely goal was scored by the opportunistic Burra forward who tapped in a goal mouth scramble, 0-1 to Greensborough. In the ensuing ten minutes Burra were able to continue its run and snagged another goal to take them to a 0-2 lead at the half time whistle.

Waverley left the half thoroughly disappointed after playing quality hockey yet finding themselves down and scoreless. The beginning of the second half was no better with a comedy of errors that saw Greensborough take a 3-0 lead after a penalty stroke being awarded. A resilient Waverley emerged with striker Sparrow Swindells picking up the crumbs and slotting the Panthers opener for a 1-3 scoreline. Shortly after Greensborough replied with Waverley gifting an unlucky own goal deflection, 1-4 at the fifty minute mark.

The next twenty minutes were chaotic and exhilarating as the brave Blue Boys rallied. The hard running Wes Moore found himself on the end of a dangerous pass in space and swiftly finished, 2-4. Almost immediately after Moore’s purple patch continued by netting another goal to give the Panthers some hope and a scoreline of 3-4.

A rattled Greensborough attempted to snuff out the Panther revival by slotting a goal after a breakdown in the midfield to steady their score at 3-5. Yet Sparrow Swindells had other ideas after pick-pocketing the Burra defence followed by a well placed shot to claw Waverley back to 4-5. With less than a minute in the game the Panthers pressed and were rewarded with a turnover being crossed from the right connecting with a desperately diving Dallimore who dribbled the ball over the line to draw the game at 5-5 at the death.

The courage of the Panthers will be a major confidence booster after stealing points at the challenging Greensborough home ground. Waverley will maintain third spot and must now host fourth placed Hawthorn to reinforce its position in the top four of the competition.

Waverley vs. Hawthorn at Ashwood reserve this Saturday beginning at 2:00pm. All members of the Waverley Hockey Club are invited down to the home ground for a large Club Day and to support its top teams as they strive for success in its 50th year celebrations.

Waverley 2 defeated MCC 1.

The Panthers met MCC at the State Hockey Centre looking for revenge after the round 2 embarrassment. The team welcomed back Matt Freeman from injury to further strengthen the lineup heading into the business end of the season. The tight nature of the State League 1 competition means Waverley needs to win the remaining games to secure finals and a top two spot.

Waverley started convincingly by controlling the game in the first 15 minutes of the opening half. This early period saw the Panthers surged through the MCC lineup creating numerous goal scoring opportunities which went either agonizingly wide or were swatted away by the MCC keeper. This lack of scoreboard pressure allowed MCC to gain confidence and build momentum resulting in several piercing long balls finding MCC forwards in dangerous positions.

The game hung in the balance with Waverley unable to net any goals from various penalty corners and field opportunities. Yet a late barrage by MCC and sloppy defence by Waverley saw a MCC forward penetrate the circle after beating 2 Panthers along the base line then passing for a tap in at the opposite post. This conversion took MCC to a 1-0 lead at the half time break.

The Panther’s returned to the game in the second half knowing they had been on top but really needed to convert the given opportunities. The breakthrough came after a dazzling run from Simon Preston was delivered to Nick Dallimore on the dot who swiftly slotted the goal, 1-1. The goal boosted the confidence of the Panthers who aggressively pressed the MCC defence causing countless turnovers.

This new found confidence ran hot through the team as Waverley got the better of MCC. A penalty corner was awarded to the Panthers after yet another turnover and was slammed into the bottom corner by a Steve Jarvis dragflick, 2-1 to Waverley. Late into the game MCC became desperate and were able to conjure 3 penalty corners which were expertly saved by Tommy Scott after yet another exceptional game in the net.

The much needed win has moved Waverley into third spot yet still 5 points shy from top of the table Camberwell. The Panthers must now refocus for a massive game against Greensborough at Greensborough this Saturday at 2:00pm. All support from Waverley members are encouraged in a season defining moment.

The Panthers travelled out to Matlock to confront top of the table Camberwell looking for a win and top spot. The intense rivalry between the two clubs followed on from history and delivered a high-paced, skillful and passionate brand of hockey, reflected by the close score line.

Waverley began sluggishly and found themselves unable to take possession of the ball in any meaningful way. The lack of possession and high rate of turnovers resulted in Camberwell playing the first 15 minutes in their attacking half peppering the Waverley defence. This was somewhat indicative of the entire game with the Panther’s struggling to apply consistent pressure throughout the field.

Camberwell struck first after a breakdown in defence on the left saw an unpressured Camberwell forward have a clean shot at goal to open the account at 1-0. The Panther’s regained some composure and were able to reply through Luke Young, who continues his fine form up forward, to level the scores at 1-1. The hard earned goal was quickly undone with Camberwell converting a penalty corner just before half time, 2-1.

The Panther’s entered the second half with the confidence that they could undoubtedly improve on their lackluster start to the game. Waverley responded positively with a new found aggression and caused several turnovers from the Camberwell defence. Yet, both teams were unable to notch another goal causing a flair in tempers that resulted in a yellow card being awarded and Waverley down to ten men with 15 minutes on the clock. A late flurry from the Panthers was “to little too late” with the scores being finalised at 2-1 at full time.

The loss has thrown Waverley back amongst the mix vying for the top four. However, Waverley can take the close scoreline as a positive from the game after a below average performance as well as Tommy Scott having an outstanding day in the net to keep the Panthers in the game. It was also great to see a large contingent of Waverley support on the sidelines, it was much appreciated.

The SL1 competition has a break next weekend which will see the Panthers in training before repaying MCC for the round 2 upset. Waverley SL1 will resume at the State Hockey Centre at 3:30pm 11th of July.

Waverley hosted ninth placed TEM in a season defining moment to clinch second spot on the table. The match served as a stern reminder to the competition of the Panthers offensive potency with a crushing victory recorded in clinical fashion.

Waverley began with a punishing blow to the young TEM outfits ego with 4 goals recorded to the Panthers in the first 15 minutes of the game. The first manufactured from a piercing Steve Jarvis overhead collected by Simon Preston who broke the TEM defence with a cross which was swiftly slotted by young gun Luke Young to open the account at 1-0. This goal was promptly followed by a well executed penalty corner finish by the in-form Young, 2-0.

With their tails up the Panthers tore through the demoralized TEM defence to again score with Simon Preston finishing an impressive solo effort with a quick shot over the keepers stick, 3-0 within the first 10 minutes of the game. The floodgates continued in the fifteenth minute with a lifted cross through the circle being punished by Wes Moore into the net for a 4-0 lead. Waverley continued to pepper TEM yet we were unable to further the scoreline which was settled at 4-0 at half time with a clearly shaken TEM incapable of a shot on goal.

The Panthers continued its control in the second half yet a reorganised TEM were finally able to enter the game. A rare shot at goal was supplied to TEM from a penalty corner awarded early in the second half. It was converted by TEM after a dragflick received an unlucky deflection from the Waverley runner, 4-1. However, the experienced Panthers replied through Tim Wischusen with a diving back stick slammed home to reassert Waverley at 5-1.

The final blow came in the last 10 minutes from Luke Young who was able to finish a goal mouth scramble to record his hat trick on the day and to settle the game at a 6-1 victory to the Panthers at home.

The win has propelled Waverley into second spot at the halfway point of the season and away from the log jam in the middle of the table. The Panthers will now travel to Matlock to meet top of the table Camberwell in an exciting rematch of the two in-form teams. All supporters are urged to make the trip to Camberwell this Saturday at 2:00pm in what will be a huge match.

Goals: Preston, Moore, Wischusen and Young (3)

Team: Greaves, Glasscock, Mutimer, Thompson, Jarvis, Joseph, Moore, Preston, Wischusen, Swindells, Dallimore, Brennan, Young, Fooks.

Waverley 3 drew with Essendon 3.

Donning the new 50th Year singlets, Waverley played host to Essendon over the weekend and were hungry for a win to cement a top four spot going into the Queen’s Birthday break. However, a late error saw Essendon steal 2 points at the death in a game marked with cards, confusion and undisciplined play.

Essendon drew first blood with the ball barely crawling over the line off a corner hit to take Essendon to 1-0. The Blue Boy’s awakened and a string of plays saw numerous opportunities created without result. A late corner was converted by the Panthers which was later disallowed. The scoreline settled at 1-0 for halftime.

Waverley entered the second half with immediate success which saw a goal mouth scramble slotted by Timmy Wischusen, 1-1. As the Panthers gained momentum and applied strain on Essendon’s defence the cracks started to open up. The build-up of anxiety saw two Essendon players yellow carded within 5 minutes. Without delay the Panthers pounced and a remarkable base line pass from Luke Young was again finished by Timmy Wisch on the right post, 2-1.

The struggle between the teams continued and bodies were put on the line. A 50/50 contest between Jarrod Glasscock and an Essendon player caused a heavy collision which resulted in a broken collar bone for the Essendon player. After the collision Steve Jarvis found himself behind the net and a corner awarded against Waverley. Essendon converted the corner to level the score at 2-2. With 5 minutes remaining the undermanned Panthers pressed its agenda which saw a sizzling cross from Lachlan Fooks deflected by Sparrow Swindells into the top corner of the net, 3-2.

With less than 3 mintues remaining Waverley only had to ice the game for a win. Yet an unnecessary offensive was counter-attacked by Essendon which resulted in a late stroke being awarded. Essendon converted to level the scores at 3-3. Waverley’s final assault saw a corner after the whistle, yet we were unable to finish leaving the scores at a draw.

Even though the draw was disappointing for the Panthers we are playing a much improved brand of hockey. It is not long until the Blue Boy’s put it all together.

Goals: Timmy Wischusen (2) and Sparrow Swindells (1)

Team: Scott, Glasscock, Mutimer, Fooks, Jarvis, Joseph, Moore, Preston, Wischusen, Swindells, Dallimore, Brennan, Young.
