WHC Senior Presentation Night 2010

Once again the Panthers annual Senior Presentation Night is fast approaching and is shaping up to be a memorable night for all.

The WHC has had yet another successful year on and off the field throughout the 2010 period – Especially with the double header wins of our elite SL1 Men and Women teams, so let’s see season 2010 out with a bang.

Seats and reserved tables are filling up fast so gather your teammates and get involved.

One of the major supporters of the Waverley HC has furthered its involvement in Hockey by sponsoring HV.

Congratulations to Lucy Young who has been successful in being selected in the U/18 Victorian Team in 2009. The tournament is held in Canberra and is from 30th June until the 11th of July.

As previously mentioned the Metro One team are going to be at the club this friday for a yearly review and to watch a copy of the grandfinal.

There is a junior summer series on that night aswell.

I was thinking if people got there about 7:30 p.m and we kick off things about quarter to 8.

Bar and canteen will be open. But have been asked to control ourselves whilst the children are around.

Waverley boys win gold at Champions Trophy

Waverley superstars Travis Brooks, Stephen Mowlam and Luke Doerner helped the undefeated Kookaburras claim the Champions Trophy in India on Sunday night.

A great acheivement for them, and confirms their talents in being key contributors in the world's number one ranked team.

Brenda Powell is ensuring that preparations for season 2006 are still progressing, but as she has indicated, has not renominated for the position of womens vice president.

The Executive are committed to two facilities projects this year in erecting an electronic scoreboard and upgrading the BBQ area. They are looking for tradesmen or suppliers who can help out with materials and labour for the BBQ project and funding support for both projects.

Reducing the club debt after relaying the surface is progressing well and it is hoped that it will be paid in full over the next 2-3 years. During that time though, the replacement of the lights will be looked at and costings done, so the matter of continued fundraising activities is vital.

Neil Brooks was nominated by Ed Hoye and Brian Benfield and Ed spoke of Neil's contribution to the Club over many years. He has certainly been an integral part in playing, coaching and administration of the Club.

Travis, Steve and Luke have been acknowledged for playing a minimum of ten games with the Australian team and having been members of Waverley HC for at least five years.

As the Club approaches its 50th birthday in 2008/9, the Executive are asking for members to volunteer to be part of a group to organise associated activities. You don't have to be old to participate! A few people put up their hand at the AGM, but more volunteers are needed.

Winners are Grinners at Presentation Night

Congratulations to all award winners for the 2005 season and many thanks to Rebecca Eastman, Wes Moore and Aaron Swindells for organising another brilliant night.

Unfortunately, both winner's of the Best and Fairest for State League 1 Men and Women were not able to attend. Christine Brown won the women's award, while Travis Brooks took out his second SL1 B&F after having played in only 12 games of the regular season due to his National commitments. Brooksy was taking a well earned rest on holiday prior to a National camp in Perth last week in the build up to the World Cup Qualifiers and Champions Trophy later this year. I asked him about his award and this is what he had to say,

Waverley won its third successive State League 1 Premiership on Sunday, beating a valiant Greensborough in an unforgettably close contest.

Glenn Simpson opened scoring for Greensborough early in the first half, converting a lifted ball from close range following a scrap for possession in the Waverley goal mouth.

Luke Doerner replied soon after with a powerful, low dragflick to even scores at 1-1.

The first half saw possession alternate between both sides, with Travis Brooks and Lachlan Fooks dominating on the right side for Waverley.

Some poor outletting from the Waverley defence enabled Greensborough to build pressure and generate several corners which were aptly handled by Mowlam. A quick breakaway saw Travis Brooks run coast to coast, leaving all in his wake, slipping the ball to Doerner in the circle who neatly finished around the oncoming Greensborough goalkeeper.

With the score 2-1 at halftime, coach Richard Nally reinforced objectives, warned against the oncoming Greensborough and demanded his side take the initiative by scoring first.

The defence settled in the second period, with Matthugh Freeman one of the best afield. Unfortunately, Tim Thompson was sent off for body contact on Vivian Taylor, followed by Tim Wischusen who played a lifted ball above his head. Waverley rallied, and drew on all its experience, surviving both yellow card periods and replied with Doerner

Waverley make history with SL1 wins

Waverley made history at the weekend by winning both the State League 1 mens and womens grand finals. Essendon HC and Essendon Ladies HC have won in the same year, but they are seperate Clubs. Both games were tough and caused supporters many anxious moments, but talent and determination prevailed and 3-2 was the result in both games. Luke Doerner and Renee Trost were awarded the player of the match awards.

Pennant D women win Grand Final 6-1

Despite of the gloomy start to the day with rain and dark clouds, the weather cleared over the hockey centre for the duration of the Pennant D Womens game. A large band of supporters were there to watch this talented group of girls meet the undefeated Yarra Valley and they weren't disppointed with the contest that ensued. Seven minutes into the game and the scoreline showed Waverley 2 Yarra 0! The open and aggressive play continued and by half time Waverley led 6-0. Both teams made some changes at half time and Yarra came out a little stronger than their first half performance, but we were able to hold them to one goal.

Udani made some great saves in goals, Fleur and Laura were very solid on the back line repelling most forays into the circle by the opposition forwards. Kelly held the team together at CH and distributed the ball around the field. Alex and Cathy held their wings out of the game and gave good support to their forwards. Krista, Rebecca, Jane, Alissa, Kristine and Courtney penetrated the opposition in the forward line. Kristine particulary impressed with her two goal tally and a great deflection over the back line when helping defend on a short corner. Laura and Ashlea came on late in the game to help keep up the momentum.
Of course as director of the production, our heartiest congratulations to Raoul Fernandes for working with the girls all year and getting them to receive the ultimate prize. Graeme Mann has also done a good job of managing the team and making sure they were all there on time.
For most of the players it was their first full year of senior hockey, and it was also the last season of weekend competition for Fleur Paton – a career spanning over 30 years. Fleur must have been the lucky omen – she has played in five grand finals – and won every one of them!

Well done team!!!

Reward for top young player

Stacia Joseph, a member of our SL1 team has been rewarded for hours of hard work improving her skills with the opportunity to attend a training camp at the AIS in Perth. At the culmination of the camp, the squad will be named for the next World Youth Cup. Stacia played her junior hockey at Waverley where she was coached for a period by Adrian Kucyk (from the MEns SL1 team).She attributes much of her early love for the game to Adrian's coaching. Stacia is presently a member of the Under 21 team and played in the Vipers team this year too. We wish Stacia well at the camp and at the upcoming national Under 21 championships

Trav, Gimp & Luke win Azlan Shah

Congratulations to Travis, Gimp and Luke who beat Korea 4-3 in extra time at the Azlan Shah tournament in Malaysia on Sunday.

The Kookaburras were undefeated with Luke impressive in his debut international tournament.

The stars will be back to play against Greensborough next weekend, round 9.

Olympians Receive Australia Day Awards

Our own Travis Brooks and Steven “Gimpy” Mowlam have both received the Medal of the Order of Australia Medal for their “service to sport as a gold medallist at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games”. Congratulations to them both for another outstanding achievement.
