TARGET 1000 – Let’s aim for 1000 people to come through those gates on Saturday to show the proud and dominant force that Waverley HC is.

The day kicks off strongly with our two impressive under 9’s teams taking the field against Doncaster’s best under 9’s. The Under 9 Panthers will be looking to cement their 1st and 2nd places on the ladder – The next generation look strong! The club encourages parents and their kids to stay on for the day – We are supplying two jumping castles and have a Cub Card available for purchase on the day.

Cub Cards – $5 will get the kids one soft drink, a sausage and unlimited time on our two jumping castles.

Following will be an 120 strong minkey brigade taking the field to showcase the future of the club. Club members from State League 1, Pennant A and B will be down to help out coaching the minkeys program from 10:30am. Doncaster minkeys are also making the trek to Waverley HC to join in the fun. Again the club encourages the minkeys to stick around and to make use of the Cub Card!

WHC will welcome sponsors, supporters and council members at 12:00 noon to the club for a great day of socialising, food and hockey!

The third placed Pennant A Men will be looking for a win against the fourth placed Doncaster at 12:30pm – A win could potentially boost the team to first place!

2:00pm will showcase the clubs best Men’s talent with the State League 1 taking the field against Doncaster. The boy’s are coming off a strong win against Greensborough at home. They will ensure a fast paced, skillful and exciting game for the the home crowd to enjoy.

3:00pm Will see the $1000 draw begin, make sure you have tickets (ONLY $30!).

3:30pm the third placed Women’s Pennant A team will take on second placed Doncaster in what should be a well fought match to cement a finals spot!

5:00pm will showcase the final match of the day with the Pennant D Women looking to knock off a lowly PEGS to ensure a finals berth coming into the business end of the season.

Since taking over the reigns of the Men’s club, Zac has been mapping out a fitness program that will see the entire club, from State League down to the Metro teams, in tip-top conditioning come season 2010.

From the Waverley Hockey Club to the Shrine in the city, the numerous locations of the sessions have kept a freshness about the sessions as well as adding in different ‘terrain’ challenges that the boys have to conquer in order to complete the sessions.

Whilst the sessions have been physically and mentally challenging, it has been fantastic to see the numbers that have been consistently rolling up each week and the enthusiasm that each individual brings to training.  Each session has seen every team throughout the club represented which has been great for building camaraderie throughout the unit, something that we’ve let slip over the past few years.  The way the entire group is pushing each other to get through the ‘tough’ parts of the session has been great to see. The high 5’s and pats on the back irrespective of who you are and what grade you’re playing has seen everyone come together as one.

With a couple of weeks leading up to Christmas the boys are keen to continue finish the year on a good note, pushing themselves to the limit.

If you want to come down to any session, everyone is welcome irrespective of your ability. PB players are expected to train twice a week.

PE and metro – Wednesday 7:20 – 8:30

PE players must train to be selected in PE. PE and metro will train as a group for the next couple of weeks before breaking into teams.

Remember, for all grades, attendance at training will be taken into account at the selection table.

These sessions are designed for all aspiring Pennant E players and Metro players for season 2009. If you are planing on playing any higher catch up with Brett and the SL1 guys and do some real training haha.

All 2009 Under 17’s wishing to play seniors in 2009 are also welcome to attend training as it is a great chance for you to meet some of the older players at the club and build on your fitness and skills.

Please find attached a timetable of the sessions being conducted over the next 6 weeks. We will be doing running as part of all the sessions as well as some strategic fitness testing. In February depending on field availability we plan to do skills as well as part of training.

At present we are looking at the two Metro 2 teams going head to head with the mixture of some Metro 3 players coming down. If we get a few met 3 then we could have 3 games as a round robin type event.

Kick off is at 12:30 with the game starting at 1:00 or so…

Remember this is a Social game and normally involves the forwards playing backs or goal keeper and the backs playing forward. So bring your happy smiley faces along.

Waverley vs Old Xaverians

It was a warm day and the fitness of the players was testament to the gruelling season long fitness training undertaken by the players.

Before the game I asked for a good warm up so as to carry us into the game, well the warm up was good.

The first half was @&%*. Our passing was bad, our traps were bad, our tackling was bad, pretty much we were bad. At one point Old Xaverians had 2 players behind the net and we still couldn’t get anything to happen.

But on a positive note at half time we were only 1-0 down. The half time chat, after the yelling, quite positive with some enforcement of some tactics discussed before the game. And the thought we couldn’t get any worse. To top things of gun right half Mark McGLOUGHLIN was done for the finals campaign after doing a hammy after about 20 minutes.

The second half started a lot better with better ball work and stronger tackles and leads.

A few short corners were obtained and after a 2 person variation Chris CASTLE put away his 19th goal for the season to draw back level.

No long after a miss hit from Jamie STAMMERS of another short corner got us a second goal and the lead which we kept and looked the stronger team for the last 20 minutes of the second half.

But with 5 minutes to go against the run of play the Old boys were able to deflect the ball into the net from the top of the circle. The game ended 2-2 and extra time was called for which was pretty even with neither team scoring. We went through on points.

Goalie Rhys EDDY had a fantastic game making several crucial saves. Jamie STAMMERS, Toby FERGUS, Chris HOCKING and Darryl SEEDSMAN were there usual hard working selves.

Chris CASTLE, Warren MOORE, Simon LEUNG and Mal SMITH were good in attack and cover defence.

Andrew LOUEY, Jimmy SMITH, Matt BARCA and Aaron POWELL were good and rock solid in defence.

Mark McLOUGHLIN well he was good for the first 20 minutes.

So straight to the GF we go. Its on Sat the 20th at a place to be determined.

Hopefully we’ll get a good crowd to support us.

Ill start with round 13

We played against Essendon at Essendon.

The game was a good one, with a strong good performance from everyone.

Chris CASTLE kept up the good work and scored 2 goals and Warren MOORE and Darryl SEEDSMAN scored the other goals.

The game was the first for Waverley veteran Chris HOCKING.

The game ended up 4-4.

Best for Waverley were Jamie STAMMERS, Chris CASTLE and Mark McGLOUGHLIN.

Round 14

Next up was against Doncaster at home.

Once again a full team was named and we all turned up.

The game was a breakthrough for full backs Matt BARCA and Aaron POWELL with a lot of ball movement between them setting the scene for the rest of the year.

Doncaster’s goalie was up to the game and produced some great saves.

Chris CASTLE was again on the score sheet with Warren MOORE, Peter COX and me also getting goals.

The game ended up 4-0.

Best for Waverley were Jamie STAMMERS and young gun Matt BARCA.

Round 15

We travelled to Moorabbin to play Southern.

This was going to be hard game with Southern sitting 4th.

A tough game was had a we found the attack harder than normal. Chris CASTLE was again able to trouble the scorers but most other attacks were able to be thwarted.

The second half was a bit better with the attacks better calculated but we were unable to score with Chris CASTLE just missing with another shot.

That was until Jamie STAMERS was selected to strike the short corners. By the end of the game he has 2 goals to his name.

The game ended 3-0.

Best for the panthers were Jamie STAMMERS and another young star Toby FERGUS.

Round 16

I have no idea about this game as I had to work.

I do know that we were playing Yarra who have been our vodo team for the last couple of years. We played at the hockey centre.

From sporting pulse Jamie STAMMERS, Warren MORE and Darryl SEEDSMAN scored goals.

From the votes best were Jamie STAMMERS and Matt BARCA.

Round 17

This was going to be the most important hame of the year with the panthers playing the 3rd placed Greensborough.

The flying Dutchman Rudy was able to make it and played the game with us.

They have a couple of really good players who threatened to take over the game but we were able to shut them down.

We got some good goals with Chris HOCKING, Rudy LAMEIJN, Toby FERGUS, Jamie STAMMERS and Simon LEUNG able to put goals away.

Greensborough scored 3 goals against us and the score ended up 5-3.

Once again best for the panthers were Jamie STAMMERS and young gun Toby FERGUS.

Round 18

For the last game of the year we travelled to Kew.

With Kew sitting 6th this was a danger game. If we won this game we were on the way to Pennant E in 2009.

The game started off pretty well with some great lead up work from Darryl SEEDSMAN to Chris HOCKING let Warren MOORE score a good goal.

After that the boys started getting a bit cocky seeing a female goalie and a defence that gives them a bit of room. The long through ball was tried a lot and some miracle balls did not come off.

At half time I remind them that the game we play is for short passing game with a lot of ball movement. The second half was better which allowed us, or better yet Chris CASTLE to score 2 goals in the second half.

This took his tally to 18 for the year.

Final score was 3-0.

Best for us was Matt BARCA and Chris HOCKING.

That meant Pennant E for us next year and the finals to come.

Both sides are in great form not dropping a match for over 6 weeks. But finals are another story and we are all looking forward to seeing them in action. For all you panthers out there get down and support some of Waverley’s great characters and indeed juniors soming through the ranks as they look for September glory. Superstars like Darryl Seadman and Matthew Kriek will be the men to watch in September as the cream comes to the top.

Waverley (Met 1) V Old Xav – 1.45pm

One told me friday that he couldn’t make it, one told me about an hour before the game and one I forgot was in Perth. So that left 10 players to start the game.

Phone calls were made and a player made a mercy dash to come to our assistance but not before half time.

The blokes played really well. The ten of them ran the entire game and never quit. The only thing that let them down was there passing. It would sometimes go to the opposition, sometimes go no where and sometimes go anywhere else.

Old Melburnians made the most of an extra player and were able to score mid way through the half. Waz MOORE was able to score a really nice goal to make it even.

Half time and we were a full team again. I tried to get the guys to be more hungry for goals and to make the most of there passes.

The passes improved a bit, the hunger improved but the thing that did not improve was the accuracy.

In the second half Id say we bomed about 10 shots that were a legimate chance.

Oh well. There always next week.

The game finished 1-1.

Fantastice effort by all for the game which we pretty much controlled.

Next week top of the table clash against Old Xavier at home, if not doing anything come and watch.
