WHEN – Saturday 31st July from 11PM.

TICKETS – $30 ticket for entry into the $1000 draw, two drinks of your choice and a sausage.

TARGET 1000 – Let’s aim for 1000 people to come through those gates on Saturday to show the proud and dominant force that Waverley HC is.

The day kicks off strongly with our two impressive under 9’s teams taking the field against Doncaster’s best under 9’s. The Under 9 Panthers will be looking to cement their 1st and 2nd places on the ladder – The next generation look strong! The club encourages parents and their kids to stay on for the day – We are supplying two jumping castles and have a Cub Card available for purchase on the day.

Cub Cards – $5 will get the kids one soft drink, a sausage and unlimited time on our two jumping castles.

Following will be an 120 strong minkey brigade taking the field to showcase the future of the club. Club members from State League 1, Pennant A and B will be down to help out coaching the minkeys program from 10:30am. Doncaster minkeys are also making the trek to Waverley HC to join in the fun. Again the club encourages the minkeys to stick around and to make use of the Cub Card!

WHC will welcome sponsors, supporters and council members at 12:00 noon to the club for a great day of socialising, food and hockey!

The third placed Pennant A Men will be looking for a win against the fourth placed Doncaster at 12:30pm – A win could potentially boost the team to first place!

2:00pm will showcase the clubs best Men’s talent with the State League 1 taking the field against Doncaster. The boy’s are coming off a strong win against Greensborough at home. They will ensure a fast paced, skillful and exciting game for the the home crowd to enjoy.

3:00pm Will see the $1000 draw begin, make sure you have tickets (ONLY $30!).

3:30pm the third placed Women’s Pennant A team will take on second placed Doncaster in what should be a well fought match to cement a finals spot!

5:00pm will showcase the final match of the day with the Pennant D Women looking to knock off a lowly PEGS to ensure a finals berth coming into the business end of the season.

Remember to show your support by getting down for the day to ensure we reach TARGET 1000.

Round 2

Saw us travel to Reservoir to play La Trobe Uni who had a very good win in round 1 and was seen to be a good opposition. Captain Daniel DOBBINS made the trip to run the bench after falling ill during the week.

After the long drive we settled down to play some good hockey. The good work from round 1 continued with Darryl SEEDSMAN controlling the midfield, young star in the making David HOWSON causing havoc at right inside and fullbacks Kendall BROWN and Rob JARVIS controlling the defence and repelling their attacks.

David HOWSON was able to snare 2 very good goals, one being a cracking shot to the top left hand of the goal. Darryl SEEDSMAN was able to put away a rebound of the goalies pads and I was able to kind of trap a ball that other people had missed and just put it in the net.

La Trobe were able to come back and score 2 late goals. We played pretty structured, balanced hockey with which we can only improve.

Round 3

The first home game of the year we won 7-0 playing against a 10 man Yarra. You might look at the score and say not bad. But the problem is we didn’t play very good hockey.

Tim STOCKS put away 3 goals, David HOWSON continued to impress scoring 2 and James WEBB and Tim HUGUENIN scored 1 each.

We were strong all over the ground and controlled the game well but at the end it was kind of like under 9’s were everyone was trying to go the circle and score a goal.

We weren’t disciplined or patient in our attack and could have scored more goals if we had been able to settle the play.

Round 4

Another long trip to Greenborough. With them sitting 3rd it was going to be another hard game and to make it even harder Darryl SEEDSMAN decided to go to Castlemaine for mothers day (bless him). Despite that we still had a very strong team with veteran Simon LEUNG being able to play his first game and Ben HOCKING traded for David HOWSON due to both having other commitments.

The game was a hard and physical one that we ended up winning the game 2-1, but the score didn’t do us justice with us controlling the game for the first half and having a lot of circle penetrations but just not being able to finish. Without SEEDSMAN I moved into the centre half role and the production went down about half. The ball movement was still good with our outside halves and wingers being given lots of room which allowed us the room to move the ball around.

Greensborough’s tactic was to hit long balls to their forwards and hope to out run us. Andrew LOUEY, Kendall BROWN, Rob JARIVS and HOCKING provided good cover defence which stopped any of their attacking runs.

Good movement allowed Tim STOCKS to have the ball and perform a good turn and put the ball into the back of the net. Not long after Greg STRYDOM was able to score a second goal which sent us into the half 2-0 up.

The second half saw us drop our game and allow them back in. Particularly me, as I found the going hard with my fitness and Kendall BROWN and Ben HOCKING finished the game in the middle.

Greensborough were able to gain a few short corners in the second half and were able to put one away with a straight hit.

We had a few more chances in the second half, one that was close to being a goal that it wasn’t funny, but we were unable to score any more goals.

We finished the game ahead and are looking forward to our next meeting with them.

Since taking over the reigns of the Men’s club, Zac has been mapping out a fitness program that will see the entire club, from State League down to the Metro teams, in tip-top conditioning come season 2010.

From the Waverley Hockey Club to the Shrine in the city, the numerous locations of the sessions have kept a freshness about the sessions as well as adding in different ‘terrain’ challenges that the boys have to conquer in order to complete the sessions.

Whilst the sessions have been physically and mentally challenging, it has been fantastic to see the numbers that have been consistently rolling up each week and the enthusiasm that each individual brings to training.  Each session has seen every team throughout the club represented which has been great for building camaraderie throughout the unit, something that we’ve let slip over the past few years.  The way the entire group is pushing each other to get through the ‘tough’ parts of the session has been great to see. The high 5’s and pats on the back irrespective of who you are and what grade you’re playing has seen everyone come together as one.

With a couple of weeks leading up to Christmas the boys are keen to continue finish the year on a good note, pushing themselves to the limit.

If you want to come down to any session, everyone is welcome irrespective of your ability. All state league and pennant grade boys get involved and have a catch up before the festive season.

Monash had the panthers measure all day with Waverley only getting half a dozen opportunites to score. Andrew Spence scored the opener about 20 minutes into the first half after some fantastic work by Anthony Field down the left hand side and assist from Andrew Fox. Unfortunately Monash replied to have the game locked up at 1-1 at half time. The panthers had a small opening through Skillern and Fox in the last seconds of the half which they could not convert.

In the second half the Monash side scored early and applied pressure throughout the whole ground. Spence and Whetton battled hard through the conjested midfield but the boys coulod not find their way to the goal. A contensious decision that awarded Monash their 3rd goal through a corner made things really difficult. A show of strength by Skillern to win a corner then score through a drag flick gave the side a glimmer of hope with 15 to go 3-2 only to have the goal ansered within 2 minutes.

Monash held on for a 4-2 win and the rights to play for a premiership against Baw Baw.

The game was a heated one with not only the players being warned by the umpires but the spectators.

On behalf of the Metro 2 South team we would like to thank you all for your support over the last two weeks. The team and its members will learn a lot from the finals experience and look to go two wins better in 2009.

After a shakey start last week against Frankston the side bounced back in the second half to record a hard faught win. Tomorrow will be no different as the game is tipped to be close again between the two sides.

The move to swing Matthew Kriek forward to work with young gun Andrew Spence and goal scoring machine Andrew Fox should cause enough headaches to worry the slow but steady Monash defense.

Captain Scott Jolly will sure up the half back line with Skillern and Dunne who will look to control the tempo of the game.

‘There is no better test to have in round 18, the group is excited to be playing in the finals but will treat tomorrow as the start of the campaign’ said Skillern.

Aidy Miles is back to 85% fitness and the likes of Webby, G and Tin Man are on the improve as we move to the September action.

A key player in Gippsland Under 18’s Country Championship win in 1997 the kid from Koonawarra in South Gippsland knows what it takes to win on the big stage. His experience in big games is vital to the success of the panthers come September and coach Skillern is looking for something special from his once kinda collegue.

‘He has the smarts when playing hockey. His ability to make tackles outside the defending circle is amazing. He is our human wall’

Aidy will work hard over the next three weeks to get his match fitness up in readiness for the finals assault.

METRO 2 SOUTH MATCH DETAILS:

V’s HMAS Cerberus 2pm SATURDAY.

Jason and Tin Man held the banner up as Skillsy broke through to start proceddings. Waverley started the better as they moved the ball forward at every chance. Some poor decision making in the front half cost the team chances.

Aidy Miles made his first appearance after 3 weeks out as he started to steady the ship down back which enabled the team to move Kriek forward. Half time came and the score was 0-0 and with the team in need of lifting. Skills demanded more leadership out on the field as the efforts were being left to only a handful of players. The spray worked with the opening goal happening 20 seconds into the half after some brilliant work by Spence and Skillern to find Krieki for his first.

The intensity then lifted as Webby started to find himself in goal scoring positions as well as Robbie winning some valuable corners at right wing. Krieki scored a second half way through the second half and then a 3rd with 7 minutes to go. All three goals were set up by Skillsy who got into the action himself scoring the 4th in the last 5 minutes.

Next week the team travel to Hastings to take on the NAVY BOYS. The NAVY BLUES are after revenge after loosiing 12-1 last year. This year however the Waverley side is a more powerful line up and will be looking to keep their winning form coming into the finals.

No body at the ground was let down as both sides battled all day. In the first half the panthers had the run of play running the ball very nicely though the midfield through Skillern, Kriek and Seedman. The good work resulted in an opportunist goal for youngster Andrew Spence and he didn’t dissapoint giving the panthers a 1-0 lead at half time.

In the second half the home side continued to run hard and wear the tiring panthers side. With 10 minutes to go the Baw Baw side got the equaliser after full backs Kriek and Talty had battled hard. Dunny was sensational at left half back as was Scott Jolly who went into right half back as we were missing Aidy Miles.

A final result 1:1 was a fair one as the side turn to Collegians X and revenge next weekend at home on Saturday. It will be Skillsy’s 100th for Waverley so plenty to play for on our home ground.

Monday was Kreiki’s 19th birthday another year on from his debut under Skills as coach.

‘He can be bloody anouying at times but he is a good kid’

This weekend a year older Krieki and his team mates will take on league leaders Baw Baw at Berwick for a chance to take bragging rights home remaining the only team in the league they are yet to beat. Its a challenge everyone is looking forward to.

‘They (Baw Baw) have hit 89 goals this year, so average something like 7 a match. They can score and score quickly but we have enough tallent and experience out there to make life tough for the top side’
