The WHC has had yet another successful year on and off the field throughout the 2010 period – Especially with the double header wins of our elite SL1 Men and Women teams, so let’s see season 2010 out with a bang.

Seats and reserved tables are filling up fast so gather your teammates and get involved.

WHC 2010 Presentation Night Flyer Order Form

WHEN – Saturday 31st July from 11PM.

TICKETS – $30 ticket for entry into the $1000 draw, two drinks of your choice and a sausage.

TARGET 1000 – Let’s aim for 1000 people to come through those gates on Saturday to show the proud and dominant force that Waverley HC is.

The day kicks off strongly with our two impressive under 9’s teams taking the field against Doncaster’s best under 9’s. The Under 9 Panthers will be looking to cement their 1st and 2nd places on the ladder – The next generation look strong! The club encourages parents and their kids to stay on for the day – We are supplying two jumping castles and have a Cub Card available for purchase on the day.

Cub Cards – $5 will get the kids one soft drink, a sausage and unlimited time on our two jumping castles.

Following will be an 120 strong minkey brigade taking the field to showcase the future of the club. Club members from State League 1, Pennant A and B will be down to help out coaching the minkeys program from 10:30am. Doncaster minkeys are also making the trek to Waverley HC to join in the fun. Again the club encourages the minkeys to stick around and to make use of the Cub Card!

WHC will welcome sponsors, supporters and council members at 12:00 noon to the club for a great day of socialising, food and hockey!

The third placed Pennant A Men will be looking for a win against the fourth placed Doncaster at 12:30pm – A win could potentially boost the team to first place!

2:00pm will showcase the clubs best Men’s talent with the State League 1 taking the field against Doncaster. The boy’s are coming off a strong win against Greensborough at home. They will ensure a fast paced, skillful and exciting game for the the home crowd to enjoy.

3:00pm Will see the $1000 draw begin, make sure you have tickets (ONLY $30!).

3:30pm the third placed Women’s Pennant A team will take on second placed Doncaster in what should be a well fought match to cement a finals spot!

5:00pm will showcase the final match of the day with the Pennant D Women looking to knock off a lowly PEGS to ensure a finals berth coming into the business end of the season.

Remember to show your support by getting down for the day to ensure we reach TARGET 1000.

Since taking over the reigns of the Men’s club, Zac has been mapping out a fitness program that will see the entire club, from State League down to the Metro teams, in tip-top conditioning come season 2010.

From the Waverley Hockey Club to the Shrine in the city, the numerous locations of the sessions have kept a freshness about the sessions as well as adding in different ‘terrain’ challenges that the boys have to conquer in order to complete the sessions.

Whilst the sessions have been physically and mentally challenging, it has been fantastic to see the numbers that have been consistently rolling up each week and the enthusiasm that each individual brings to training.  Each session has seen every team throughout the club represented which has been great for building camaraderie throughout the unit, something that we’ve let slip over the past few years.  The way the entire group is pushing each other to get through the ‘tough’ parts of the session has been great to see. The high 5’s and pats on the back irrespective of who you are and what grade you’re playing has seen everyone come together as one.

With a couple of weeks leading up to Christmas the boys are keen to continue finish the year on a good note, pushing themselves to the limit.

If you want to come down to any session, everyone is welcome irrespective of your ability. Each session is designed to challenge you at the level that you are currently at irrespective if it is your first or 10th session, all welcome.   Just send me an email (tnbrooks@gmail.com) and I’ll pass on the info so that you know when and where to be to join in the sessions.

Nick D'Onofrio takes on Doncaster

After a fairly even start Doncaster were able to find an opening in Waverley’s defence to score the opening goal. Despite several strong attempts from both teams, including one Doncaster shot hitting the post, the score remained this way until a final surge from the Waverley forwards resulted in a pently corner after the final whistle. In the last throw of the dice, the corner variation to the left side was put in the back of the net to draw the game level and force the game to extra time.

Once again Waverley found themselves in extra time in this finals series. Both teams had opportunities up forward, with Doncaster having one attempt disallowed. Once again Waverley responded in the final seconds, with Rudi able to slip a pass through Doncaster’s defense to Chris Castle who slotted the ball past the sliding keeper to win the match and secure the premiership.

Big weekend of GRAND FINALS  coming up, so get out and support your club.

Start off on Friday 18th  at S2 to see the U13 Shield team take on TEM at 6.15 pm

or alternatively go down to Monash  watch two games, the U13 North play Doncaster at 7.00pm followed at 8.30 pm when the U15 East take on Knox.

On Saturday 19th  you can start the day by popping into

H2 at 8.30 am to see the U11 North take on Box Hill for the flag.

So that may be a bit early for some of you. If so then make your way to Monash where at

Of course some changes were made. Zane HOLLAWAY returned after a few years away, Nico D’ONOFRIO is playing full time and young gun’s Andrew SPENCER and Tim STOCKS have come up from Metro 2. The team also suffered a big loss with veteran centre half Jamie STAMMERS getting transferred with his job to Papua New Guinea and only able to play a hand full of games.

The team is well lead by co-coaches Simon LEUNG and Warren MOORE. Darryl SEEDSMAN also provides veteran leadership.

There is also the next level of players, not young but not old, in Rhys EDDY, Aaron POWELL, Chris CASTLE and the previously mentioned HOLLAWAY.

D’ONOFRIO, STOCKS, SPENCER and Toby FERGUS provide the youthful input that we need.

The season has gone quite well with the leadership group discussing that middle of the table would have been a good result at season’s end. After round 8 the panthers are on top of the table. With only one game to go against 3rd placed MCC.

The hockey being played has been pretty good and the standard has been good with the exception of playing last placed MUHC, were we had a draw.

With half the year almost here the Pennant E boys will look to cement a place in the top 4 and see how we go from there.

PB players are expected to train twice a week.

PE and metro – Wednesday 7:20 – 8:30

PE players must train to be selected in PE. PE and metro will train as a group for the next couple of weeks before breaking into teams.

Remember, for all grades, attendance at training will be taken into account at the selection table.

These sessions are designed for all aspiring Pennant E players and Metro players for season 2009. If you are planing on playing any higher catch up with Brett and the SL1 guys and do some real training haha.

All 2009 Under 17’s wishing to play seniors in 2009 are also welcome to attend training as it is a great chance for you to meet some of the older players at the club and build on your fitness and skills.

Please find attached a timetable of the sessions being conducted over the next 6 weeks. We will be doing running as part of all the sessions as well as some strategic fitness testing. In February depending on field availability we plan to do skills as well as part of training.

Due to hockey matches being played that evening we will be doing 25 parmas each hour: 7pm, 8pm, 9pm. So please specify what time you would like yours!!

All state league and pennant grade boys get involved and have a catch up before the festive season.

A full team turned up and after a good warm up the game was on.

The pace was pretty good from the start. ball movement, talk, and general play was 100% better than last week.

The possession in the first half was about 50-50, but the panthers made the most of it.

Chris CASTLE continuing with his great season by following up a good circle penetration by slotting the first goal. Dean SHARP, playing his first game for the panthers also put a good one past the keeper and Warren MOORE was able to gather a pass outside the circle, beat the keeper and make the score at half time 3-0.

Play in the first half was so good that the only thing to talk about was the height of the full backs and to tell CASTLE to stop trying his over heads.

The second half stared as well as the first, but about 15 minutes into it the old boys started to come back by scoring 2 quick goals.

The panthers were able to gain a free hit just outside the circle and Jamie STAMMERS hit the ball straight at the author, my aim was to trap it, turn and shoot. But Ive completley missed the trap, the ball has nicked my stick and Ive gone bugger, turned my head and watched the ball go straight past the keeper into the net for the 4th goal.

Xaviers were able to pull one more goal back and the final score was 4-3.

That puts us equal with Xaviers on top of the table. But a long way behind on goal difference.

Best players were Rhys EDDY in goal. Mark McGLOUGHLIN, Jamie STAMERS and Toby FERGUS .
