Womens Vets in Semi final last Monday
Posted September 10th 2006 by Rhys Eddy No CommentsIn the first finals game for a Waverley team in 2006, the Womens Vets B team went down with a valiant effort 4-2 against Camberwell Monday night. Thanks to the three supporters who came along (two husbands and one son) to cheer us on. This was our third consecutive appearance in the semi final, maybe next year we will break through to the next stage.
The following is a review of the season by team manager Carolyn McEwin and some of our team members.
Women Winter Vets Team Report 2006 – Carolyn McEwin
I would like to thank all our team members for making the Women’s Winter Vets such an enjoyable season.
We had a very successful year, ending in 4th position but managing to be competitive with the three teams above us. With 3 weeks to go before the finals, second, third and fourth positions were all on the same points only separated by percentage.
The most memorable moment of the season was beating Mentone 3-2 after full time was called, on a short corner. The hit out was poor, so the ball had to be pushed out of the circle, then returned into the circle, deflected three times within the circle and finally popped in by Julie Orgill standing on the post for her first ever goal. The celebrations were remarkable – we thought we had won the World Cup. Mentone remained on top of the ladder and are favourites for the flag but we beat them in a awe inspiring last minute goal by a very jubilant first year player. I must say in all my years of playing hockey I can’t remember ever winning after the full time whistle and I certainly can’t remember any vets teams jumping on each other in jubilation.
It was great to see some new faces this season and see the development in players completing their first season. Hopefully we can build on our numbers and keep most of the players together for the summer season.
I would like to say a special thanks to Brenda Powell who due to injury played little of the season but always attended and supported the team and fulfilled our umpiring obligations when required. Thanks Brenda it was very much appreciated.
Thanks again everyone and stay tuned to your emails for details of our end of season function and the coming summer season.
Bronwyn Maddock – Season highlights would be beating Mentone, great fun and sportsmanship, assists from Janine and Cecila’s (nickname Fiona) great goal in the final. Carolyn and Janines string of goals and great keeping by Lyn.
Anne Shannon – mother of junior players Tom & Prue Casey
This year I got one the best compliments I have ever received. You’ve really improved and you’ve obviously lear.ned so much from your kids… I rushed home to my children, as they did when they first started hockey, to brag about my coaches words of encouragement… ah yes, it is never to late to lear.n, laugh and really enjoy the company of happy, uninhibited, skilled and friendly women. Thank you so much to the vets women’s team for a wonderful return to hockey after 30 years.
Julie Orgill – Hockey, what a game! Having not played hockey before, I was welcomed with open arms into a team of fine upstanding young vets, who played an awesome team game of hockey. My fitness was lacking, my skills were poor and my muscles ached for days after each Monday night’s game, but I loved all of it – the game, the players and the spirit. I really appreciated my team mates helping me with positioning and ball skills and I know I frustrated them at times, but hopefully I made up for it…It was a great experience and I hope to continue through the summer season and beyond!
