Women’s TAS Wrest Point Van Demons drew with Victorian Vipers 1 - 1
(Half-time 0 - 0)

Goal Scorers:
TAS – Sofie McLeod FG 42nd min
VIC – Stephanie Riordan FG 48th min

A drew was a fitting result to a hard fought match between the Tas Wrest Point Van Demons and the Victorian Vipers in the second match of the Australian Hockey League Round 1 in Hobart. With both teams after important points it was a slog for most of the game.

Midfield battles and great work by defenders and goalkeepers was a feature of this match. Van Demons Captain and defender, Nicole Geeves, was a pillar of strength not only in defence but as a leader to her team. She was well backed up by Harriet Moore who is clearly relishing her role as import goal keeper for the Van Demons.

The Victorian Vipers worked equally hard with the Hockeyroos star, Georgia Nanscawen working hard with Stephanie Riordan up front.

The half time break arrived with a nil all deadlock but it was in the second term that the Van Demons thrilled the partisan crowd with a breakthrough goal from Sofie McLeod, deflecting a purposeful penalty corner strike from Nicole Geeves.

As is often the case, the Vipers fought back strongly and it was only a few minutes later that Stephanie Riordan, in perfect position in front of goal, slapped the Viper’s equaliser in.

Van Demons, Sofie McLeod and Nina Khoury were hungry for possession and continued to worry the Vipers but few opportunities arrived for the Van Demons. A late penalty corner for the Vipers was their last opportunity to take the lead but no conversion mean both teams had to settle for sharing the points.

The VIC Vipers have their toughest game of round 1 tomorrow against the NSW Arrows while the Van Demons will get a feel for where they stand after their match against the Canberra Strikers.

Following their recent silver medal at the Samsung Hockey Champions Trophy tournament in Sydney, the Hockeyroos have turned their attention to the qualifying for next year’s World Cup.

Hockeyroos coach Frank Murray has announced his squad to compete against New Zealand and Samoa in a World Cup Qualifier event in Invercargill, New Zealand from August 24-29.

A travelling squad of 19 athletes has been selected, with the final team of 18 players to be announced on August 24. This decision has been made to ascertain the impact that the Women’s Junior World Cup campaign has on players Casey Eastham, Emily Hurtz and Georgia Nanscawen who are currently competing at this tournament.

The travelling squad is extremely similar to the squad that competed at the Samsung Hockey Champions Trophy in July, with defender Heather Langham the only omission.

Veteran defender Kim Walker, who missed the Champions Trophy due to injury, returns to the Hockeyroos team while Victorian striker Claire Messent has also been named in the travelling squad.

Should the Hockeyroos be victorious at the World Cup Qualifier event, in which the Kookaburras will also be competing against New Zealand and Samoa at the same time, they will advance directly to the 2010 Women’s World Cup in Argentina from 30 August – 12 September.

The Hockeyroos squad remains quite young, with nine of the 19 players having only played 20 or less international matches.

VICTORIANS SELECTED

Stacia Joseph
Position: Defender
Age: 23
Caps: 9

Rachael Lynch
Position: Goalkeeper
Age: 23
Caps: 17

Claire Messent
Position: Striker
Age: 23
Caps: 8

Georgia Nanscawen
Position: Striker
Age: 17
Caps: 13

Sarah O'Connor
Position: Defender
Age: 24
Caps: 19

The race for State League 1 supremacy intensified over the weekend with round 13 shuffling things...

The race for State League 1 supremacy intensified over the weekend with round 13 shuffling things around at the top of the men’s and women’s competitions.

In the women’s side of things Doncaster is the big mover having won four and drawn one out of its last five matches. This week’s tight win against Altona pushes Doncaster into the fringes of the top four and puts the pressure on Mentone, which is Donny’s nearest rival. Meanwhile Altona remains planted at the foot of the table still winless after 13 rounds.

Despite Altona’s current predicament the Seagulls have been playing well and luck has favoured their opponents, which means that a strong run home could see them survive the drop.

At the other end of the spectrum, Greensborough continues to lead the competition with a six point buffer from nearest challenger the Essendon Ladies. This week the Burras disposed of MCC thanks to single goals from Riordan sisters Stephanie and Tegan who lead the charge on the weekend. The Ladies are not far off though and secured an important victory against Camberwell, which remains in the top four for the time being.

In the men’s competition Doncaster’s performance against Altona produced a spectacular result in which the Seagulls suffered a 7-0 loss. In one of their worst results this season Altona succumbed to Donny which had all its guns firing simultaneously. Up and coming youngster Jayshaan Randhawa also made the scoresheet and we can expect his name to be a common feature in weeks to come.

TEM topped Donny in the scoring department with an 8-1 win over Southern United which has boosted its goal advantage, which will come in handy when the relegation dogfight picks up momentum. Southern remains anchored at the bottom of the league table and are yet to relive the joy felt back in round 11.

The local derby between Hawthorn and Waverley produced the round’s only hat-trick with James Mulcair taking the individual honours. Despite Mulcair’s efforts the Panthers took the points on the day, bettering the reigning champs 5-4.

Hockey Victoria recently ran a poll asking the hockey public if they thought Hawthorn will compete in this year’s Grand Final and the results convincingly swayed to no. Out of 360 votes 33% could see the Hawks playing in defence of their title, while 66% were convinced of the contrary. There were also some undecided (6%) who are still watching results to see how things pan out at the business end of the season.

WSL1 – ROUND 13

This Saturday the 25th of July the Waverley Hockey Club will be hosting a massive day down at its spiritual home, Ashwood Reserve.

Day
During the day the bar will be open for business serving the coldest beveridges, a big BBQ and spit roast will be fired up – not to mention the top class hockey on display from 12:30pm until 6:30pm.

Footy, Food & Friends
As the night rolls on the Big Screen will be wheeled out to provide a first class viewing of the AFL clash between the top placed Saints Vs. third placed Western Bulldogs. The bar will continue continue into the night and food will be available.

Featured Event
Last but not least the night will reach its climax when the Annual Waverley Snail Races take place in the club rooms. The event is a very controversial subject after last years champion snail was disqualified after officials discovered it was actually Ant Green with a shoe box on his back and the only snail to use elbows during the race.

All are welcome and we look forward to seeing you all at the club!

Only teams are stated for specific times, its up to each team to generate a roster around these times. Thanks in advance for helping out around the club. It’s not a huge commitment but one that is needed to ensure the club has success off the field as well as on.

Hey all,

We hope you are enjoying the new website and its features. Over the coming weeks we will be adding further improvements as well as properly filling out some of the missing content. Until then please bookmark the site and make sure you check back daily for all Waverley HC updates plus use the MyWHC pages to check team news and fixtures.

We are also looking for representatives within the club to make match reports on their teams performance each round. We a hoping to have weekly updates from a variety of teams in the Men’s, Women’s and Juniors to help keep the whole club up-to-date on your teams performance.

If you are interested in contributing please email admin@waverleyhc.org.au OR leave a comment down the bottom of this post with your name and email to contact you on and we will set you up with an account.

What a great night to celebrate 50 years of Waverley Hockey Club! It was great to have founding members Hedley Hull, Les Large, Kingsley Hull and Arthur Tuckett in attendance.

I would like to pass on special thanks to the following people whom contributed enormously over the last couple of months to make this such a fabulous night.
Waverley congratulates Emily Paton and Sheree Thompson on making and competing in the Under 21 Women’s Australian Championship this month.

The Championships were held in Sydney, NSW from the 14th until the 25th of April.

Victoria powered through into the semi-finals to be defeated by the narrowest of margins (1-0) by Tasmania who went on to win the Championships. In the following playoff they went on to beat Western Australia to place them 3rd in the tournament which is a outstanding result.

Emily even hit the score sheet with a goal!

Congratulations go to both girls who now come back to play a major part in the Women’s SL1 team.

Hi All -

Well last night we begun our campaign for season 2009 – and those that were there met out SL1 coach, Andrew Steele (Smokey).

Thank you for all of those who made the effore to come down last night, it was nice to see all the same smiling face and in particular nice to see some new faces down at the club. A special thank you to Stacia Joseph who came down to run the session, it was nice of you to offer us some encouraging words while we are slogging it out and you are standing and watching us!!! Ha ha

Smokey will not be there for the next week as he is venturing off into the sea on a sailing boat – doesn’t really sound like a lot of fun to me. But upon his return he is really looking forward to getting to know all of us…and please make him welcome in our true Waverley style!!! Good luck Smokey

For those of you that can make it on Saturday some of the girls will be meeting down at the club at 9am for a 30-40 min jog. If you cannot make it please ensure that you are going for a run on your own, Smokey has already made it very clear that one of his main priorities will be having fit players in his squad. So if you are aspiring to play SL1 this year, which you all should be then get running girls!!!

Next Wednesday 14th Jan we will be meeting at the club at 6.30pm – please be there on time so we can get going straight away. Those who are interested somr of us will be meeting at 6.15pm to do the Huntingdale Road run before, all welcome!

See you next Wednesday

Chook
